After Sima Yi answering Pang Tong, the conversation turned to lighter topics, with the men sharing stories of their past experiences. Zhuge Liang recounted humorous anecdotes from their days at the Xiapi Academy, drawing laughter from everyone. The camaraderie among the group deepened, a testament to the mutual respect and understanding they shared.
Meanwhile, as the wedding date approached, the Lie Clan residence buzzed with activity, with Wannian at the center of it all. In her room, she diligently practiced the lessons imparted by all of her sisters in law, not just Diao Chan anymore.
The teachings were no longer limited to etiquette and the duties of a lady of the house, they now encompassed a broader perspective on navigating the complexities of marriage, especially during turbulent times.
Ying Yue, the eldest of Lie Fan's wives, took the lead, her demeanor a mix of maternal warmth and authoritative guidance. "Wannian, as the lady of the house, you must be firm but kind. Assigning tasks is not about dominance, it's about fostering harmony. A well managed household reflects the strength of its mistress."
Diao Chan, graceful and perceptive, chimed in with her own insights. "And remember, appearances matter. Your poise and elegance will speak volumes, not just to your household but to everyone who visits. They will judge Sima Yi by how you present yourself."
Cai Wenji, who had a natural talent for fostering a serene atmosphere, added, "While these duties are essential, never forget to cultivate your own happiness. A joyful heart radiates strength. Music and poetry have been my sanctuary, perhaps you might find yours in something similar."
Lu Lingqi, who was the most tomboy between them all and fiercely protective, interjected with her unique perspective. "But don't rely solely on peace and grace. Learn to defend yourself. Love is a powerful bond, but these are chaotic times. Sima Yi may protect you, but knowing how to protect yourself will give you confidence."
Wannian listened intently, her admiration for her sisters in law growing with each passing day. Each of them embodied a unique blend of wisdom and strength, and their devotion to her well-being touched her deeply. She felt a profound sense of gratitude, especially towards Ying Yue, who had watched over her since childhood.
"Thank you, sisters," Wannian said, her voice steady but filled with emotion. "Your guidance means everything to me. I want to honor our family and my marriage. I will do my best to follow your advice."
Ying Yue placed a gentle hand on Wannian's shoulder. "We know you will, dear sister. And remember, you are not alone. Just as your brother has been our strength, Sima Yi will be yours. But never lose sight of who you are."
The room fell into a comfortable silence as the women exchanged smiles, their bond as a family growing stronger.
As the wedding preparations continued, the city of Xiapi transformed into a vibrant tapestry of color and sound. Lanterns illuminated the streets, casting a warm glow over the bustling markets. Performers entertained crowds with acrobatics, music, and storytelling, while vendors sold an array of festive goods.
Lie Fan took time to mingle with the citizens, his presence further strengthening the bond between the ruler and the ruled. His genuine interest in their lives and well being was evident in every interaction, earning him even greater admiration.
On the eve of her wedding, Wannian found herself alone in her room, gazing out at the moonlit courtyard. The lessons from her sisters in law echoed in her mind, each piece of advice a thread in the tapestry of her future.
Her thoughts drifted to Sima Yi, the man she loved and was about to marry. Their bond had grown steadily over time, built on mutual respect and shared values. Yet, beneath her excitement, there was a flicker of apprehension.
Would she be able to navigate the challenges of marriage and her new role? Would she live up to the expectations of her family and the people of Xiapi?
As if sensing her unease, Ying Yue entered the room, her presence a calming balm. She sat beside Wannian, taking her hand in her own.
"Feeling nervous?" Ying Yue asked gently.
Wannian nodded, her voice barely above a whisper. "A little. I want to do everything right, to make you all proud."
Ying Yue smiled, her eyes filled with warmth. "You already make us proud, Wannian. And remember, perfection isn't the goal. Happiness and integrity are. Sima Yi loves you for who you are, just as we do. Trust in that love, and trust in yourself."
Wannian leaned into her sister's embrace, drawing strength from her words. As the night wore on, her nervousness gave way to a quiet determination. She was ready to step into this new chapter of her life, supported by her family and the man she loved.
After enjoying the embrace, Ying Yue smile and gently caress Wannian's head, saying to her gently that it was time for Wannian to take a rest since tomorrow would be her big day, and she would need all the rest she could get since the procession, ceremony, and banquet will take all day long.
Wannian look up to Ying Yue, smile and nodded her head, indicating that she understand where then they release the embrace, and Ying Yue leaves Wannian's room so Wannian could sleep.
Ying Yue's soft, soothing voice lingered in Wannian's mind long after she left the room. The gentle caress on her head and the warmth of their shared embrace gave Wannian a sense of calm she desperately needed.
She lay down, taking deep breaths as she gazed at the ceiling, her thoughts slowly settling. Tomorrow was her wedding day, the day that would mark the beginning of a new chapter in her life. With that thought, she drifted into a restful sleep, her heart both heavy with emotion and light with anticipation.
The next day, morning sun broke over Xiapi, casting its golden rays over the bustling city. The streets were alive with energy, buzzing with people preparing for the grand event.
In the Lie Clan residence, the atmosphere was nothing short of organized chaos. Servants and maids moved with purpose, carrying flowers, trays of offerings, and decorations, while guards ensured everything remained orderly.
Inside Wannian's room, the young bride was awake, surrounded by her sisters in law and several of her handmaidens. Wannian sat on a plush stool as Diao Chan carefully applied her makeup, her delicate hands moving with precision.
Ying Yue ensured that every detail of Wannian's jewelry and accessories was perfect, from the designs of the jewelry to be used by her and also the positioning of her accessories. Cai Wenji hummed a soft tune in the background, her voice calming the room, while Lu Lingqi stood nearby, her arms crossed, scanning the scene like a protective older sister.
At this time, her mother, Yu Yan entered, holding the magnificent red Chinese wedding gown she had prepared for Wannian. The gown shimmered in the morning light, its intricate golden phoenix and dragon embroidery symbolizing harmony and prosperity.
Her eyes brimmed with both pride and sadness as she approached her daughter. "Wannian," she said softly, "this gown is a gift from me, a symbol of the love and blessings I carry for you into this new life. You've grown into a remarkable woman, and I couldn't be prouder."
Wannian turned to face her mother, tears welling up in her eyes. She stood and embraced Yu Yan tightly. "Thank you, Mother," she whispered. "I will do my best to honor our family and my new one."
The room was filled with an emotional silence as the women watched this tender moment. Diao Chan gently broke it, her voice light but firm. "Now, let's not ruin all the hard work with tears. We still have a long day ahead." This elicited a soft laugh from everyone, easing the tension as they helped Wannian into her gown.
Meanwhile, in the main hall of the Lie Clan residence, Lie Fan sat in his position of honor, dressed in his finest robes. Beside him was his father, Lie Shang, equally regal in his attire. The two men sipped their tea, their expressions calm but reflective.
"She's grown up so quickly," Lie Shang remarked, his voice tinged with melancholy. "It feels like just yesterday she was that little girl running around the courtyard, chasing butterflies and clinging to your leg."
Lie Fan smiled faintly, his gaze distant. "She'll always be our little girl, no matter where she goes or who she marries. But today, she's taking a step toward building her own life, her own family. It's bittersweet, Father, but it's also something to celebrate."
Lie Shang nodded, his eyes glistening with unshed tears. "You've done well as her brother, Fan'er. She's lucky to have had your guidance. And now, she's marrying a good man. Sima Yi may be ambitious, but he is steadfast and honorable. He will take care of her."
Lie Fan's expression softened. "I trust him, Father. And I trust Wannian. She's stronger than we sometimes give her credit for."
Outside, the streets of Xiapi were lined with onlookers as the Sima Clan's wedding procession made its way from their residence to the Lie Clan's. Leading the procession was Sima Yi himself, dressed in a richly adorned red wedding robe, riding a majestic steed. His demeanor was calm and composed, but his eyes betrayed a mixture of excitement and nervousness.
Beside him rode his elder brother, Sima Lang, who offered words of encouragement and light hearted banter to ease the tension. Behind them were Zhuge Liang and Lu Xun, both dressed in formal attire.
Lu Xun, having arrived from Lujiang just in time for the wedding, seemed particularly energetic, waving to the crowd and engaging in cheerful conversation with Zhuge Liang.
"You seem more excited than the groom, Boyan," Zhuge Liang teased, a rare smile gracing his face as be looked upon Lu Xun.
Lu Xun laughed. "How can I not be? This is a grand occasion, Kongming! Besides, I've been cooped up in Lujiang for too long. This is a refreshing change of pace."
Sima Yi glanced back at them, a small smile breaking through his otherwise serious expression. "I'm glad you could make it, Boyan. It wouldn't have been the same without you."
Lu Xun grinned. "I wouldn't miss it for the world, Zhongda. You and Sister Wannian deserve all the happiness in the world."
As the procession neared the Lie Clan residence, the sound of drums and gongs announced their arrival. The streets were alive with cheers and applause, a testament to the excitement and joy shared by the people of Xiapi.
The main courtyard of the Lie Clan residence had been transformed into a stunning venue, adorned with red silk banners, lanterns, and flowers. Wannian emerged from her room, escorted by her sisters in law, her steps graceful and poised. Her beauty, enhanced by her wedding attire, drew gasps of admiration from those present.
Sima Yi dismounted from his horse and approached her, his gaze softening as he saw her. He extended his hand, and Wannian placed hers in his, their eyes meeting in a moment of silent understanding.
The ceremony commenced with traditional rites, overseen by Cai Yong who blessed the union. Lie Fan and Lie Shang watched with pride, their earlier sadness giving way to joy. Yu Yan wiped away tears as she witnessed her daughter step into this new phase of life.
As the couple bowed to heaven and earth, their parents, and finally to each other, the atmosphere was charged with high emotion that shrouded everyone. The cheers that erupted when the rites were completed echoed across the residence and into the streets beyond, and the groom and bride looked at each other with happy smiles.
