Chapter 9 - CHAPTER 6

Monday morning, I woke up at 5:30 and got dressed in black basketball shorts, a grey muscle t-shirt, and black sneakers. I went into the backyard and started jogging through our forest. There was a river that ran through it a mile in, and after about thirty minutes, I reached it. This has become my marker for my morning runs, and once I reached it, I stopped for a few minutes. I enjoyed watching the fish swim through the water, and after a couple minutes, I started jogging back to the house.

Going into the kitchen, I grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge before going upstairs. Once I was back in my room, I took a hot shower before getting dressed for school. My outfit was black skinny jeans with a chain hanging from the belt loops, a band t-shirt, combat boots, my piercings, and a black choker with small studs.

I put my wallet into my backpack before putting on my leather jacket. With my backpack on, I slipped on my riding gloves, grabbed my keys and helmet, and walked out the door. Our parents had already left for work and I was leaving early on purpose. It was only 7 o'clock, but I was going to McDonald's to get sausage biscuits for my brothers and myself. After I got the bag with the biscuits secured, I went to school.

I pulled into the school parking lot and quickly found Josh's truck. Parking beside him, I handed out the biscuits so that we could eat while walking. Mom and dad had asked the school to put our lockers next to each other, and as we walked to them, I heard the whispering start.

"God, it's that freak!" One preppy student said, not bothering to lower her voice.

"His eyes look cool! I want contacts like those!" A new student said before someone told them to stay away from me.

"Don't bother going near him! He beat someone up last year, and they're still recovering from a broken jaw!" The third student said, causing the second students' eyes to widen in shock. Sighing, I knew this year wouldn't be much different than last year. Putting the things that I didn't need for the first three classes in my locker with my helmet, I slammed my locker shut.

"Just ignore them, man. These damn idiots don't know the difference between self-defense and beating someone for no reason." Josh said loud enough for them to hear.

"Yeah, they also don't know the difference between looking like a person and looking like a clown! Maybe our sister could give them advice." Dominic added, just as loud. That got the other students, as well as myself, laughing at them. He had a point, though. Their makeup was so heavy and thick, that it was funny.

Shaking my head, we walked to our first class which was AP History with Mr. White. After attendance, he started teaching about the war between the Beasts and the Humans. I already knew this from Magnis and Nightmare. Since they were the only ones that could reincarnate, they had memories from all their lives. The experiences that I went through just solidified their deep dislike of Witches and Wizards.

Even though I already knew this lesson topic, I still took notes, but I also doodled in the margins of my paper. Seeing that I wasn't paying full attention, Mr. White called me out to answer a question. It was a question that I knew the answer to immediately.

"Mr. Slate, since you seem to think it's okay to daydream in my class, please answer this question. What were the names of the Dragon and Ayakashi Kings and their respective powers?" Everyone, other than my brothers, started snickering.

"The Dragon King was called Magnis Rex and his powers were over Fire, Electricity, Darkness, and Poison. Nightmare was the name of the Ayakashi King, and his powers were over Darkness and Ice. Magnis's Fire had the temperature of Absolute Hot and Nightmare's Ice had the temperature of Absolute Zero." I answered the question before going back to drawing. Everyone had gone quiet since the question wasn't something that Mr. White had talked about yet. They all looked at him to see if it was correct.

"That's right… how did you know that when I hadn't gone over it yet?" The teacher was surprised that I already knew this. Smiling, I answered him.

"I'm a shifter, Mr. White. A Dark Dragon to be specific, and my Dragon godfathers made sure I knew my history. The fact that I was a shifter wasn't a secret, but the fact that I was a Dual Shifter was. The rest of the class stayed silent after that, and Mr. White continued the lesson.

"The old man had the guts to try and make a fool of us!" Nightmare wasn't pleased with what just happened.

"He also made it sound like we're dead! We're right here!" Magnis roared, as if Mr. White could hear him.

"Guys, you have to calm down! You're gonna give me a damned headache!" I yelled at them. This was one thing that sucked about being a Dual Shifter. Having two extra voices in my head that liked to yell. Once they calmed down, I went back to taking notes and drawing.

Class went by fairly quickly, and when the bell rang, Mr. White asked that I stayed. My brothers stayed as well, saying that they weren't in a hurry for the next class. Turns out, Mr. White wanted to let me know that the school had told all my teachers about my 'special situation.' He gave us his cell phone number, that way, if anything happened, we could let him know.

Walking to our next class, AP Biology with Ms. Harris went okay. News that I was a Dragon shifter has spread like wildfire, but it didn't bother me. My parents gave me permission to say this, as long as my Dual identity stayed hidden. Magnis and Nightmare were also pretty good about disguising themselves as normal shifters, even if they've forced it. The fact that they share the same Mirage ability also comes in handy for this.

AP Biology was uneventful, but Ms. Harris told us that we would learn both Human and Beast anatomies, so that peaked my beasts attention. They enjoyed learning things they could use in a fight. After that was lunch, and as my brothers and I walked into the cafeteria, the whole room fell silent. A group of kids walked up to us, and prevented us from going further to the lunch line.

"You are going to regret coming to this school, you freak." A tall boy with short brown hair said. His scent was familiar, but I couldn't remember where I had smelled it before.

"Do you guys know him, because I sure as hell don't." I asked Josh and he shook his head. Adam and the twins didn't know him either, so I raised an eyebrow and asked who he was.

"You damn bastard! My brother was William, and you broke his jaw before summer vacation! I'm his twin brother, Bill!" Bill yelled at me while throwing a punch at my face. Moving my head a little, I grabbed Bill's wrist and twisted it backward. Not enough to break it, but it would still hurt. Pulling him to me, I grabbed the back of his neck with my other hand and whispered in his ear.

"What I did before summer vacation was self-defense. Keep this up and I'll be your worst nightmare. Leave me alone and we'll leave you alone." Moving his head back so that he could see my eyes, I let them flash bright yellow. Showing him that Magnis could come out at any time. Shaking, Bill broke free and left us alone.

"Damn! His reaction was priceless!" Damian said as we got in line to get lunch. I didn't normally threaten people, but I would still do it occasionally. After the encounter with Bill and his friends, the rest of the day went smoothly. I hated the name 'school's residential bad boy' but I would embrace it if it meant a calm year.

The last two classes were AP Algebra with Mr. Norris and AP English with Mr. High. Tomorrow we would start PE with Coach Hill and my private Art classes during lunch period. Heaving a sigh as the last bell rang, I grabbed my books and helmet from my locker and headed home. It was a peaceful drive and when I got inside, I went straight to my room. My godfathers had messaged me earlier today saying that there wouldn't be any training, since it was the first day of school.

My homework was interesting. For History, we had to write an essay about our summer; Algebra was solving problems on a worksheet; English was another introduction essay including our likes and dislikes; and no homework was assigned for Biology. The two essays didn't have to be very long, and I finished them before dinner. Mom ordered Mexican take-out, so I took a break from homework when it arrived.

"So, how was school?" Mom asked as we were beginning to eat.

"Eh. Nothing's changed. The other students still like to spread rumors, but the classes seem okay." I responded. Rumors weren't new, but they still pissed me off. It was like they had nothing better to do than talk about other people.

"I hope nothing too serious happened?" Dad asked. My parents weren't the only ones trying to avoid a repeat of last year.

"Apparently William's twin brother, Bill, goes to the school with us. He tried punching Andrew, but didn't succeed. If anything happens, it'll probably come from him, but we'll keep our eyes on him." Adam answered the question when I stayed silent.

"Andrew?" The tone of dad's voice made it clear that he wanted an explanation from me.

"He was pissed at me for breaking his brother's jaw. And when he tried punching me, I caught his hand. I didn't do anything excessive, I promise!" My parents gave me displeased looks. "His behavior screamed that he'd make this year hell for me. I told him that if he left me alone, then we'd leave him alone. That's it!"

"Sigh. I can already tell that this is going to be a rough year. Just be careful and try to stay out of fights, okay?" Mom had a worried look on her face. Turning to my brothers, she added "And keep an eye on him." We all knew that she meant me in that statement.

Finished with dinner, I excused myself and went back to my room. I finished my homework, took the sleeping pill, and then turned off my light. Sighing to myself, I prayed for a calm day tomorrow.
