As Erik and the others passed the clearing, they started seeing the city's barrier.

The group was near the city's defenses. It was a large patch of land cleared of trees and debris that would allow the soldiers to target the thaids that got too close to the walls. The area was immense.
However, for Erik and the other students, it wasn't much more than an open field with some rocks scattered around.
The open field meant they were completely exposed, making them easy targets with no way to break the line of sight or create tactical advantages.
Their pursuers would have a clear view of their movements, and the vast space meant they could be easily surrounded or cornered with no natural barriers to use as a means of defense.
