Since ancient times, to appease the wrath of the gods, people have offered sacrifices, among which the most notable are the elaborately dressed maidens.
In order to seek favorable weather, to quell disasters, to ensure that the sun continues to exist, people would select suitable unmarried maidens. After adorning them extravagantly beyond compare, they would walk up to the altar amid solemn and sacred music. After enduring lengthy prayers and rituals, sometimes they would open up the maiden's chest and extract the heart as fuel for the sun's burning; at other times, they would tie stones to the girl's feet and sink her into water to implore the gods for dew; or send the maiden into the perilous dens of monsters in the woods, to settle the eruptions of volcanoes, earthquakes, typhoons, tsunamis, and floods.
