Chapter 1824 - 27. Long Live the Emperor! (Part 12)

For all citizens of Charlemagne, especially the proud inhabitants of Lutèce, this was destined to be a day full of humiliation. From this day on, they would no longer be subjects of Charlemagne Kingdom but fourth-class citizens of the Holy Gilmania Empire.

On this day, which will live in infamy forever, apart from those who sold themselves out, every citizen of Charlemagne was filled with bitterness and pain. In corners where the police and soldiers couldn't see, the men stayed silent, women sobbed quietly, and the schoolchildren who had attended their last Charlemagne language class a month ago and hadn't learnt to write essays yet were also affected by the adults' mood—confused, bewildered, despondent, anxious, sentimental—all these emotions candidly displayed on their innocent faces, adding a touch of sorrow to the already somber atmosphere.

Even so, not a single person dared to show their innermost feelings or had the courage to tarnish the Empire's face.
