Walking in the sewer with foul sewage flowing and a nauseating stench, the girls seemed somewhat at ease.
The sewers of Lutèce were by no means a safe haven; instead, they were rife with sin and violence, with all of mankind's criminal behaviors visible in this maze-like underground kingdom, while the beauty of humanity was hardly traceable. Homeless people, the disgruntled, loan sharks, swindlers, alcoholics, pickpockets, robbers, prostitutes, intelligence brokers, contraband smugglers, intelligence workers… It seemed all the rejects spewed by society had flowed into Lutèce's sewers, where no law-abiding citizen could survive for more than half an hour.
For two young girls of appealing appearance, they should not have ventured here.
Yet for them, possessing special identities, Lutèce was one of the few places that could offer them a bit of comfort. Only here was the pervasive sense of distrust, suspicion, and feeling of surveillance in the air of Lutèce slightly diluted.
