The Land of the Gods isn't somewhere a Second-level Reaper can enter; it's a place only Ninth-level Reapers have the credentials to visit.
Fortunately, as a Second-level Reaper, he had some clout in Hell, and finally convinced a Ninth-level Reaper to go to the Land of the Gods and help him inquire if a human named Lance had been taken there.
If so, to find Lance and ask if he would like to return and take up the position of Death God.
The Ninth-level Reaper came back from the Land of the Gods and told him there was no soul of Lance, but there was the name of Lance.
That is to say, once a person named Lance died, the Land of the Gods would take him.
