Chapter 15
With the topic over Su Ying felt relieved and proceeded to serve him the food but he only gave her a suspicious look. Seeing the distrust in his gaze, Su Ying felt exasperated and angry. Taking a huge breath she explained to him.
"Rest assured the food is safe. I'm not that stupid to kill you when I know that I will be the prime suspect. Besides I need your help so I have no motives of killing you anytime. By the way, could we please keep this agreement from the kids?".
Xiao Shan pondered over her words and realized she had a point. She needed him so that meant she wouldn't try anything funny until the six months were over. Buy hearing her question, he narrowed his eyes in suspicion.
"Why should we keep it from them. They deserve to know about it?"
"I know I have been a bad mother to them so I wanted to use this period of time to make them feel cared about. Although it won't be enough to make up for all those times I still want to try. So please don't tell them anything so they don't feel pressured".
Seeing the sincerity and the way she genuinely pleaded, Xiao Shan relented. It was true that it could affect the kids mentality so he agreed.
"Okay. You have my word on it".
On hearing his confirmation, a smile spread on her lips in gratitude. She was already feeling attached to the children so hearing his words gave a relief. Meanwhile Xiao Shan was stunned seeing the pure smile that formed on her lips at his approval. His heart skipped a bit and he quickly averted his gaze to avoid her noticing anything. Clearing his throat he sat down on the chair to have his meal.
Su Ying didn't notice anything strange and happily placed the pheasant chicken soup in his plate. Xiao Shan was surprised to see the meat on his plate and wondered where it came from. Deciding to taste it before asking picked up the chopsticks and had a bite. The flavor exploded in his mouth and he felt his taste buds rejoice. It tasted more better than expected, slowly chewing he had another bite. Before he knew it he had swept the plates clean, feeling embarrassed he pretended to be calm and asked where the meat came from.
"Where did you get this pheasant chicken from?"
"It came down the mountain and I caught it. Then I entered the mountains and found the eggs placed in a nest. I already kept it in the kitchen so it can be used to have another meal. How is the food? Does it taste good?".
Hearing her unbelievable answer he said nothing. She was different but he couldn't tell what was wrong. Her eyes seemed more confident and calm and also her aura had changed. No matter how smart Xiao Shan was, he could never have thought of transmigration so Su Ying was not afraid as she met his gaze head on. Staring at her who seemed like a different person he responded.
"Hm".
That was the only response she got. Su Ying felt her lips twitch at his answer.
'So proud'
She thought in her mind but said nothing. Carrying the plate she headed to the kitchen while he went to take a bath. By the time she was done he was also done bathing. They both went outside and sat in the courtyard with the kids.
"I have to enter the mountain to check on my traps and make new ones. Take care of the kids" Xiao Shan Informed before gathering his tools and leaving the for the mountain. He was a proud and despite his leg injury refused to use a walking stick relying on his left leg for movement.
"Take care father"
The kids spoke together as they watched their father preparing to enter the mountain after eating his meal.
"Husband come back safe. I will prepare dinner before you come back".
Since they had chosen to pretend she had to do it well so without much thought she mastered her role. Xiao Shan almost tripped and fell on his way to the mountain when he heard her call him husband so smoothly.
"That damned woman".
He spoke in gritted tone. They had just agreed but she was already entering her role without feeling awkward or embarrassed. Without responding he continued on his way up.
As his silhouette disappeared into the mountains, Su Ying remembered her plan to visit the stream for fishes for dinner. Looking at the kids who looked bored she decided to take them with her.
"Xiao Ming and Xiao Yu, you both come with me to the stream to catch some fishes so I can cook and make dinner before your father comes back".
Xiao Ming and Xiao Yu felt excited when their mother asked them to come with her to the stream. They were going to catch fishes for dinner. With that thought a wide smile appeared on their lips and the both nodded excitedly.
"You both get the bucket to put the fishes inside. While I close the door and then we go together".
There was nothing worth stealing in such a house but it was best to guard against things. They had no fence but just a frail bamboo door which could fall at anytime. Closing it they headed to the stream to catch fishes.
