Chapter 88 - 88. Double S-Class Promotion

Makarov decides to promote both Mira and Cana to S-Classes. It surprises everyone because this is the 1st time 2 Mages are promoted to S-Class in the same year.

"Well, there's no rule saying only 1 person can be promoted at the same exam. Both of them have passed all the trials, so it's only fair if they are promoted. Making a new trial just to select one of them is not fair because it will make this year's exam more difficult than usual while we always try to make their levels equal each year."

Makarov might say that, but the examiners know that there's another reason too.

"Also, Cana, can you tell us about the mark on your arm?"

"Uh, well, I suddenly got it when I was looking for flags in the previous round. I found something that looks like a grave or an altar maybe. Then when I checked it out, I suddenly heard a girl's voice and this mark suddenly appeared on my arm. It disappeared soon, so I thought I was just hallucinating, but then it appeared again when I fought you, Master."

"A-A ghost?" Erza is surprisingly scared when she thinks that the voice that Cana heard was from a ghost. Currently, she is still just a teenage girl with a lot of sides that will change overtime.

"What did the voice say?" Makarov ignores Erza who hides behind Alex and asks Cana.

"Um, she told me that I had a lot of magic power and latent potential, but I wasted them because I don't use them correctly. But she could see my genuine spirit before telling me that I will be able to use this spell at its full potential. Then, the mark appeared. It glowed for a while before disappearing and it returned a while ago."

"Did she tell you what spell that is?"

"Yeah, she told me its name and incantation. I don't even try to remember it, but it is sticking in my head."

"So what's the name?" Erza is still curious even though she's quite scared of the ghost.

"Fairy Glitter."

Gildarts and Laxus frown a bit because they've heard about it before. But Erza and Mira don't know anything about it. Fortunately, Makarov is ready to explain.

"As I thought, it was Fairy Glitter."

"What's that, Master?" Mira asks curiously.

"Fairy Tail has something called Three Great Fairy Magic. Fairy Law, Fairy Sphere, and Fairy Glitter. They are created by the 1st Master and she recorded the instructions to learn them. However, they are not easy to learn. Fairy Glitter is especially difficult to learn. It's a very powerful attack spell but it also uses a lot of magic power to use. So I recommend you to not use it until you have more magic power and because of its great destructive power, I want you to only use it very carefully."

"I-I understand." Cana stiffens up because Makarov is very serious and it makes her tense.

"Anyway, the grave that you found must be the 1st Master's grave because it's the only place that looks like an altar in this whole island. The fact that you got Fairy Glitter there without ever learning about its existence means that it was the 1st Master who gave it to you."

"S-so it really was a ghost? T-the 1st Master's ghost?"

"I don't know. Maybe it was a spell she left on herself so when someone with the potential she required to pass down the spell appeared, she could transfer her knowledge about that spell to that person. It seems like Cana met her requirements because many have visited the grave, but only Cana got it. Well, you still need to learn more about it, so I will allow you to read the notes left by the 1st Master about Fairy Glitter. The 1st Master has approved you to learn it, so I need to help you."

Everyone starts looking at the mark on Cana's arm while wondering just how strong the spell will be when it's used. But of course, they can't tell anything just by looking at the mark on Cana's arm because it just looks like a tattoo.

Anyway, because of this, Alex now can confirm that Mavis is always on this island in her Ethereal form. He has tried to find her every time he's here, but he can never sense her magic power.

It makes him think that either she is really good at hiding her magic power or maybe he can't sense her because she is just a spirit. But he could sense Roubaul, another powerful spirit.

So the 1st case is most likely to be the answer, or maybe it's because she still has a body, just that it's being crystalized and her soul is separated from it. Either way, Alex can't even sense her, so he can't confirm which guess is right.

Now that the exam is over, they return to their Guild. Makarov announces the result to the Guild members and of course, it shocks the entire Guild when they know 2 people pass the exam and get promoted to S-Classes.

They are surprised because it's never happened before. But they are very happy with it. No one protests because they all believe that their Guild Master and exam examiners have made the best decision.

Besides, they know that both Cana and Mira are powerful, so it's a very acceptable decision. Everyone in the Guild thinks that Mira and Cana deserve this result.

So they just celebrate it and 2 people being promoted mean double the party. They hold a bigger party than usual. After all, they are celebrating 2 people's promotions, so they can't do the party at the usual level.

Everything goes normally after that though. The Mages do their activities as usual. They take jobs, fight in the Guild, get scolded, get drunk, etc. Life continues normally for everyone in the Guild including Alex obviously.

"How much is the translation progress, Levy?" Alex asks Levy who joined the Guild last year. He has finally gotten closer to her and can ask her help to translate the Nirvit's records he found on Nirvana.

"Not much. I'm still rewriting the records. They use words and symbols which make it harder to copy the records on paper." Levy seems tired, but she also seems happy with this task because she enjoys this kind of thing.

Wendy actually knows how to read some of the words in the records. Roubaul has taught her the Nirvit's language, but not completely. That's why she can only read some, but she doesn't know how to read most of them.

When Alex asks Levy if she can help him decipher the unknown words a while after the S-Class exam, she excitedly accepts it. This is a challenge she'll happily accept and Alex will even pay her well for this job.

But because he wants her to focus on it, her team, the Shadow Gear can't take any jobs for a while. Levy will still get money from the translating job, but Jet & Droy won't get anything because they don't work.

So to help them keep having income while Levy is working for him, Alex brings them to his jobs. Obviously, both of them are excited at first because they are always curious about S-Class jobs.

But they regret it quickly because it's much more dangerous than they thought and Alex is a demon who pushes them to their limits. Alex takes a rather easy S-Class job, a Magic Beast subjugation, and he orders them to fight it first.

Their target is a Lizardman, but it's not a normal Lizardman or else it won't be an S-Class job. This Lizardman is mutated and now can use powerful magic. But its intelligence gets lower in exchange, that's why it only follows its wild instinct and attacks human settlements while normally Lizardmen tend to avoid humans.

No one knows the cause for the mutation but they don't have time to investigate. Their priority is stopping this dangerous beast. Alex can fight the mutated Lizardman alone and kill it quickly because it's not that strong, but he chooses to make Jet and Droy fight it by themselves first.

Droy tries to use his Plant Magic to restrict the Lizardman's movement while Jet tries to attack it from different sides with his High Speed Magic. But the Lizardman is strong enough to break free from Droy's spells easily and its scales are too hard for Jet to damage.

They are having a hard time fighting it, but Alex keeps forcing them to fight it. He stands back and only gives them advice. He only helps them when they are in danger, though he only blocks the Lizardman's physical attacks and powerful Water Magic using Shukaku's sand, then he makes them fight it again.

Alex finally takes over the battle after Jet and Droy are exhausted and can't fight anymore. He shows Droy how to restrict an enemy's movement and even defeat the enemy using Shukaku's sand. He wraps the sand all over the Lizardman's body, including its mouth so it can't shoot water beam, and then he tightens the sand wrap to crush the Lizardman's body.

"You can try to imitate that with your Plant Magic. Though I think your current problem isn't technique, it's power. Seems like I need to train you and take you on more jobs until Levy is done with her job. I'll make sure you are stronger when we finish this."

Jet and Droy shiver when they see Alex's demonic smile. They've heard how intense Alex's training is from the others and now they are about to experience it, hell.
