Asher was rushed inside, his body slack in Kai's arms, blood spilling from the corners of his mouth. The sight of him like that—his usually strong, commanding presence reduced to something so fragile—sent my heart into a free fall. My breath hitched as panic clawed its way up my throat. I couldn't breathe and find the words. Nothing was making this easier.
"What happened?" I asked, my voice high, thin, barely above a whisper.
Kai's jaw was tight, his eyes shadowed with something I couldn't place—fear, guilt, uncertainty? "I don't know," he said, shaking his head. "We went to see Alpha Jared about a pack issue. Everything seemed fine, but then..." His voice broke off as he swallowed hard. "Then he collapsed. The only thing he said was your name before he hit the ground."
My stomach turned. "Alpha Jared?"
Kai's gaze sharpened. "You know him?"
