"Eavesdropping, darling?" her mother said, her tone coming out as mocking laughter.
Rose clenched her fists.
This was her house. And yet, it felt like she was the intruder.
"What? Peeking? I wouldn't. Why would I be peeking in my own house?" Rose smiled, walking confidently out of her hiding place. She refused to admit that she was eavesdropping on their conversation—she felt that would be too embarrassing.
"I see. I believe you," Mr. Stella nodded with a smile,
like she was stupid, like he really believed her words.
Rose took a deep breath, sighing in her heart, thanking God, and thinking.
They bought her lie.
"Mummy," Tobi called, attracting Rose's attention immediately.
Hearing her precious son, Rose turned to look at Tobi sitting on the chair.
"Yes, dear? What do you want?" she smiled cheerfully, walking to him and kneeling beside him on the couch where he sat.
"I'm hungry." Tobi rubbed his small belly as if showing it to Rose.
