Chapter 21 - Chapter 16: Healing the Wounds

The days following General Wei's defeat were filled with both grief and hope. The villagers, though battered, rallied together to rebuild what had been destroyed. The once bustling square, now scarred by the remnants of the battle, slowly began to take shape again, with new structures rising and crops being replanted. It was a long road ahead, but the people of the village were resilient, just as Mei Lin had always believed them to be.

Mei Lin spent countless hours with the wounded, using her knowledge of medicine to tend to their injuries. Despite her own exhaustion and the toll the battle had taken on her body, she didn't allow herself to rest. There was still too much to be done. Yet, as she worked, she couldn't help but feel the weight of the cost of the war. The villagers who had given their lives, the families who had lost loved ones—it all weighed heavily on her heart.

One afternoon, as she finished tending to a young boy who had been wounded in the battle, Li Sheng approached her, his expression a mixture of concern and admiration.

"Mei Lin," he said softly, his voice laced with worry. "You need to take a break. You've been working nonstop. You've done all you can for these people. They're grateful, but they also need you to rest."

Mei Lin didn't look up from the boy she was tending to, her hands steady as she applied the final bandage. "I can't rest, Li Sheng. There's too much to do. People are counting on me."

Li Sheng knelt beside her, his gaze gentle. "I know. But you can't pour from an empty cup. You've given so much to them, and you've given so much to me. Let us help you now."

Her breath hitched slightly at his words, and for a moment, she allowed herself to meet his gaze. His concern was genuine, and his words echoed something she had been avoiding for far too long. She had spent so much time caring for others, so much time healing wounds, that she had forgotten to care for herself.

She lowered her hands and stood up, wiping the sweat from her brow. "You're right. I've been pushing myself too hard."

Li Sheng smiled, reaching out to gently place his hand on her shoulder. "You're only human, Mei Lin. You've done enough for today. Let's go for a walk."

Mei Lin hesitated, the weight of responsibility still hanging over her. But then, she looked around at the villagers—at the survivors—and felt a sense of calm wash over her. They were starting to heal. And maybe, just maybe, it was time for her to heal as well.

The two of them walked in silence through the village, their steps slow and deliberate. The sun hung low in the sky, casting a golden hue over the land, and the sounds of children laughing and playing in the distance brought a sense of peace to Mei Lin's heart.

"I used to be afraid," Mei Lin confessed, her voice barely a whisper as they walked. "Afraid of losing control. Afraid of failing everyone who depended on me."

Li Sheng looked at her, his expression softening. "You've never failed anyone, Mei Lin. Not once."

She smiled faintly, though there was a sadness in her eyes. "I wonder sometimes if I could have done more. If I could have saved more lives. If I could have stopped the war before it started."

Li Sheng stopped walking and turned to face her, taking her hands in his. "You did everything you could. And sometimes, that's all we can do. You're not alone in this, Mei Lin. You never have been."

Mei Lin's heart ached at his words. She had been so caught up in her own guilt, so focused on the past, that she had forgotten to see the future. The war may have scarred them all, but it hadn't broken them. She hadn't broken them.

"I think I've been so afraid of my own weakness," Mei Lin continued, her voice trembling slightly. "But I've realized that it's okay to be weak sometimes. It's okay to need help. I don't have to carry everything alone."

Li Sheng pulled her into a gentle embrace, holding her close as if to reassure her that she was not alone. "And you won't. We're in this together."
