The gas spread rapidly, swirling through the room like a toxic fog. Without hesitation, Nuxsus pulled Harley into his arms, pressing a firm hand over her mouth and nose to prevent her from inhaling the fumes. His gaze flicked to Artoria, who met his eyes with a nod before fading into an ethereal state—a unique ability of Grail Servants that rendered her untouchable.
As for Nuxsus himself, the poison slithered into his lungs and bloodstream, but it might as well have been harmless air. His Poison Resistance rendered the toxin useless, and instead of panicking, he let out a deep, mocking laugh.
"Really? Poison? That's your grand plan?" His voice dripped with amusement. "For a so-called genius, you should've known better than to bring your target directly to your hideout."
The moment he finished speaking, a deafening explosion ripped through the walls. Then another. The force of the blasts sent debris flying, and as the walls collapsed, fresh air rushed in, dissipating the poison.
Nuxsus released Harley, who stumbled slightly before taking a deep breath, coughing out whatever little gas she had inhaled. "Damn, Nuxy!" she gasped. "Warn a girl next time!" Then, her expression darkened. "I didn't think that Calculator bastard had the guts to actually try and kill us..."
Before them, three figures emerged from the smoke—his Ghouls, the ones responsible for the explosions. They bowed their heads in silent acknowledgment before leading him toward the monitoring room.
The room was massive, walls lined with monitors displaying live feeds from across Gotham—streets, alleyways, secret hideouts, even the rooms within the very building they stood in. It was a surveillance network unlike anything else.
And in the center of it all, The Calculator.
He was bound tightly in the unrelenting grip of Raven's dark tendrils, struggling against their hold with little success. His usual smug expression was gone, replaced by barely contained panic.
Harley stomped forward without hesitation, her eyes blazing with fury. Without a second thought, she swung her foot right into his crotch.
"YOU'VE LOST YOUR DAMN MIND!" she shrieked as The Calculator let out a strangled wheeze. "Makin' a move on me and my Nuxy?! I oughta break ya in half!"
Nuxsus, unfazed by the outburst, stepped closer and crouched slightly, his crimson eyes gleaming with menace. "Let's make this simple," he said coolly. "I'm here for information." He tilted his head, giving a fanged smirk. "And you, my friend, have exactly two options—submit… or die."
The Calculator gulped, his eyes darting between Nuxsus and the monitors, as if searching for some kind of escape. "W-Wait! Let's talk about this! I can be useful! I—AARGH!"
His words turned into a bloodcurdling scream as Nuxsus thrust his vampiric claws into his eye socket, twisting and tearing until he ripped out an eye. Blood poured down The Calculator's face as he thrashed, his shrieks of agony echoing through the room.
Nuxsus held the dripping, crimson-stained orb between his fingers, staring at it like it was nothing more than a broken trinket. Then, with a flick of his wrist, he dropped it to the floor, letting it roll away.
The Calculator writhed in agony, his remaining eye wide with terror as blood dripped down his face. He gasped for breath, his body convulsing in Raven's dark tendrils as pain overwhelmed him.
Nuxsus casually wiped his bloodstained claws on The Calculator's shirt, sighing as if the whole ordeal had been mildly inconvenient. Then, he crouched down, bringing his face uncomfortably close to his victim's.
"That little lesson… was for trying to kill me," Nuxsus said coolly, his voice devoid of sympathy. He tapped the side of The Calculator's head lightly, just enough to make him wince. "Next time? I won't be so merciful. You'll be lucky if you even have a head left to regret your mistakes."
The Calculator whimpered, his breathing ragged, but he nodded frantically—he understood.
"Good," Nuxsus continued, standing up straight. "Now… let's talk business. Start by showing me a list of the best connections someone in my position might want."
Despite the pain, The Calculator's instincts as an information broker kicked in. His trembling fingers twitched, and with a hesitant glance at Raven's shadows still holding him captive, he coughed and began listing names.
"You—You're looking for people who can make things happen, yeah?" he wheezed. "Alright… Listen up."
Harley, still fuming from the earlier betrayal, huffed, "I already told ya about The Broker, Warp, and Underworld! Ain't that enough?"
But Nuxsus merely smirked. "Oh, Harley… there's always more." He turned his attention back to The Calculator. "Go on."
The Calculator swallowed hard. "Alright… Here's what you need to know."
The Broker – "If you want anything bought or sold in Gotham's underground, you go to him. Information, weapons, rare tech—he has it all for the right price." Warp – "Teleporter for hire. No limits. If you can pay, he'll get you wherever you need to be, no questions asked." Underworld – "An old-school arms dealer. If it explodes, shoots, or slices, he's got it." Pipe Dream – "Smuggler. Moves weapons, drugs, and people across borders without leaving a trace. If you need something off the books, he's your guy." The Penguin – "Money laundering machine. If you want to wash dirty cash and make it look squeaky clean, there's no one better." The Carpenter – "She's a genius when it comes to hideouts. Give her a rundown shack, and she'll turn it into a goddamn death trap if you've got the cash." Black Spider – "Professional assassin. If someone needs to disappear quietly—and permanently—he's the one you call."
As The Calculator finished, Nuxsus's grin widened, his fangs glinting under the dim monitor lights. He cracked his neck, rolling his shoulders as if he had just been handed the keys to Gotham's underworld.
"Not bad," he mused, "Not bad at all…" His crimson gaze flicked back down to The Calculator. "Now… I need you to find both The Broker and Underworld for me."
The Calculator blinked in confusion. "W-What? Why those two?"
"That's none of your concern," Nuxsus said, his smirk never fading. He reached down, gripping The Calculator's shoulder just hard enough to make him flinch. "But you? You have a lot of money, don't you?"
The Calculator paled, realizing where this was going.
"Use it," Nuxsus continued. "Pay them. Make it worth their time." He leaned in, his voice dropping into something darker, more menacing. "Get them to show up."
....
The next day, both The Broker and Underworld arrived as expected.
The two regarded each other in silence, their gazes sharp and unreadable. There was no love lost between them. The Broker had spent months searching for information on the woman who now stood before him—Whisper A'Daire. A shadowy figure operating under the alias Underworld, she had deep ties to the League of Assassins and controlled a vast network of smuggling and arms deals. Despite all his resources, she had remained a mystery to him.
Likewise, Whisper A'Daire knew of The Broker but had never uncovered his true identity. He was a ghost—untouchable, untraceable, his network spanning the entire criminal underworld. Yet, neither of them knew why they had been summoned here. The payment had been too good to refuse, but they had already prepared multiple exit strategies in case things went south.
Stepping into The Calculator's hideout, they moved carefully, descending the usual staircase into the dimly lit monitoring room. Instead of The Calculator, however, they found someone else sitting in his chair—someone far more dangerous.
Nuxsus.
Both of them recognized him instantly. His reputation was already spreading, whispered in the darkest corners of not just Gotham....But the World... He was too powerful to be ignored.
Nuxsus leaned back lazily in the chair, resting his chin against his knuckles as he smirked. "Well, well… look who we have here. You two are quite the interesting pair." His crimson eyes gleamed. "You both hold a lot of information that I want… but here's the thing…" He chuckled. "The contract only extends to one of you."
Underworld's lips curled into a sly smile. "Oh? You want us to compete for it?"
"Exactly," Nuxsus confirmed, sitting forward. "The winner… gets a contract worth 10 million dollars a year."
The Broker sighed, adjusting his gloves. "I'm not interested in competition. Nor am I interested in working for anyone. If you need information or a place to hide, I can provide it—for a fee."
Nuxsus's smirk widened. "You haven't even heard what the loser gets…"
Underworld's brow arched. "And why would the loser get anything?"
Nuxsus grinned. "Because the loser gets death."
The room exploded into action.
In an instant, The Broker whipped open his coat, tossing a handful of live grenades into the room. At the same time, he drew two pistols, his movements fluid and precise as he rushed for the exit.
Underworld wasn't far behind—she unsheathed her sword in a single motion, her other hand pressing a concealed button on her chest, attempting to call in backup.
But Nuxsus had already planned for this.
The grenades never detonated—each one was caught midair, wrapped in the dark tendrils of Raven's magic, before harmlessly disintegrating.
The Broker's pistols were sliced clean in half before he even had time to react. He turned to see Artoria, her golden eyes staring at him like an ant, a black sword in hand. She stood between him and the exit, blocking his escape.
Underworld, meanwhile, barely had time to register the blur of movement before a massive blood-red blade was pressed against her throat.
The wielder, Blood Knight Darius, sneered down at her. "Don't even think about calling for backup—unless you want your head to roll."
Silence fell over the room.
Then—clap… clap… clap…
Nuxsus laughed as he slowly applauded the spectacle. "Ahhh… perfect! You both seem very motivated."
His gaze flicked to the doorway. "Harley! Bring The Calculator."
A moment later, Harley sauntered into the room, dragging The Calculator behind her.
The man was barely recognizable. His missing eye was a gaping wound, his clothes were torn, and his entire body trembled in fear. But the worst part? He was crawling on all fours like a dog.
Harley giggled as she stomped her heel into his back, forcing him lower. "C'mon, Fido~ Lick my leg."
The Calculator whimpered—and obeyed, his tongue weakly sliding against her boot.
Then—BANG!
Harley slammed her foot down on his head, crushing his skull instantly. Blood splattered across the floor.
"Ughh, disgusting!" she huffed, shaking the gore off her boot.
Nuxsus sighed, shaking his head. "I warned him. Told him betrayal was useless. Even after I took his eye, he still tried to contact the Justice League." He looked at The Broker and Underworld. "That's the thing—I hate disloyalty."
His voice dropped lower, his expression turning serious.
"I'm building something far greater than this pathetic underworld. A new age of chaos. And for that? I need loyal people."
His smirk returned. "You two are informants—not fighters. So, I don't need you to prove your strength." He leaned forward.
"This will be a battle of knowledge."
His crimson eyes gleamed as he issued his final command.
"Whoever gives me the most valuable information… lives."
He grinned.
"The loser? Dies."
