Cherreads

Chapter 29 - Part 28

Luckily, after taking a bite of her own cooking, Sophie didn't add any more beef to my plate. Instead, she silently dragged the dish closer to herself.

But by then, it was too late—our colleagues had already drawn their own conclusions about our "relationship."

After dinner, one of them walked up to me, smiling.

"Mr. Lucas, how was the meal? Satisfied?"

I had been in the middle of gulping down water. At his words, I nearly choked. My face twisted into a grimace so bad it probably looked like I was in physical pain.

"It was... pretty good," I forced out.

The colleague blinked, startled by my reaction.

"Are you alright, Mr. Lucas? You don't look so good."

"No, no, I'm fine. Just... really thirsty."

Thirsty? More like desperately trying to wash away the lingering salt bomb still clinging to my taste buds.

Just then, Sophie appeared, holding out a bottle of water.

"Here, drink up."

I nodded awkwardly. "Thanks."

Rolling her eyes, she muttered, "You should've just said it was bad. I actually thought you liked it."

Completely ignoring our eavesdropping colleagues, she suddenly grabbed my arm.

"Come on, take a walk with me. I haven't seen the night view here yet."

I was about to refuse when my phone started ringing in my pocket.

I glanced at the caller ID, and my brows instantly knitted together.

Without hesitation, I declined the call.

A second later, the phone buzzed again.

I hung up.

It rang again.

Hung up.

Again.

Whoever it was, they weren't giving up until I answered.

Just as I was considering turning my phone off completely, Sophie leaned in curiously.

"Who is it?"

Before I could stop her, she grabbed my phone and casually answered the call.

"Hello? Who's this?"

On the other end, Amanda's voice instantly exploded into a shriek.

"YOU BITCH! WHY ARE YOU ANSWERING LUCAS'S PHONE?!"

Sophie made a disgusted face and pulled the phone away from her ear, waiting until Amanda's screaming subsided before lazily responding.

"Ugh, you're so annoying. We're busy right now. No time for you."

Busy?

What "business" was she talking about?

Late at night.

A man and a woman.

Alone.

Amanda's mind instantly filled with scandalous images, each one more infuriating than the last.

There was definitely something going on between Lucas and this woman!

"You slut! If you dare make a move on my husband, I swear I'll ruin you!"
