Chapter 3 - Let go

"Sign it."

Heather took the paper in a heart beat. She felt suspicious as she unfolded and skimmed through it

She looked up at him in disbelief. Her eyes teary.

"What's this?"

"It's exactly what you think it is," he replied coldly.

"You're divorcing me?

Her heart skipped a beat. She didn't want to leave him. She loved him so much. She couldn't imagine her life without him. She didn't care if he didn't love her; she just wanted to be with him. "He'll change," she kept telling herself.

But was that even healthy?

What about the baby?

Finally, a good enough excuse to stay.

Who would raise the child with her if she divorced him? Maybe, just maybe, if she told him about the baby, he'd love her. She read in an article that babies create strong bonds in every marriage.

"I'm pregnant," she said without hesitation.

Caius stood up from his seat. His eyes narrowing. He walked over to her, his face inches from hers. "So?"

"So?" Heather repeated, her voice barely a whisper. "That's not what you're supposed to ask."

"I already know that," he said, taking a sip from his coffee. The coffee she had made and kept in his office that morning. "I'll give you a billion dollars to get rid of that thing. What do you want? Two billion? Name your price."

Heather's mouth dropped. Her voice shaking, "Caius... That's our baby you're talking about. Our unborn child."

"I don't want it," he said flatly.

Heather was too stunned to speak. She felt a cold numbness spread through her body.

Caius's hand reached out to her face, cleaning the tears rolling down her cheeks. "You're so ugly when you cry." He said, then he hugged her lightly, his hands moving to her stomach.

"Get rid of it, Heather," His voice lacked emotion. "And sign the papers." He added.

She knew Caius wasn't the person to take no for an answer. And she also knew there was nothing she can do if he wants her to terminate the pregnancy. He might just as well do it himself if she hesitates. As for the divorce, she had no choice. All through their marriage, he's been the one making the decisions, while she just had to blindly follow. She have no say in anything.

"I will sign the papers. I will divorce you."

"But I have just one wish. In return, can you..." The words were too heavy to pronounce. "Can I keep the child? That's the only thing I want from you. The only thing I want to keep from our three years of marriage. Just this. Nothing else. Not even your money. I just want the baby. Our baby." She searched his eyes trying to find something, anything. But there was nothing. Absolutely nothing.

"No." He said coldly and walked away, without sparing her another glance.

And she broke down in his office. Caius left. He just left. What kind of person was this? Why was he this way to her? After everything she's done for him. He didn't know, and she doesn't want him to know. He just never appreciated her. Now he was divorcing her. Her life was just so perfect. Heather smiled. Wiped her tears.
