Don and I sat in bed talking about the semester and the students in his class. Talking to him, I felt normal. A normal life. That's what Don could give me.
We talked for hours about life, our childhood, our ambitions, and anything. Things I couldn't talk about with Santino. I don't have to think about wars or be concerned that Don might try to kill me in my sleep over some monetary business deals.
At 10:30PM, I started to get out of bed. Don grabbed me. "You know you can stay the night. You don't have to keep leaving. People might think, you're using me."
I laughed. "I'm using you? I'm pretty sure you're the Professor here. Sleeping with students seems a bit unethical. Even if I only enrolled to stay close to you."
I stared at Don. He was an averagely beautiful man. He had light brown eyes, light brown hair and smelled of pine and cedarwood. I touched his face and proceeded to get up.
Don smiled, "We definitely kept this under wraps for long enough I'm re…"
There was a loud bang from downstairs. Don froze, but I went over to his bedside dresser and grabbed the two guns I hid there a couple of weeks ago. Don was surprised, but I grabbed him and kept him close. I went into his closet and ripped out a bulletproof vest for him to put on. He was stunned, but I motioned for him to keep quiet.
I walked over to my phone and it had no signal. I inched my way over to the door and saw three lasers. I mentally started cursing at the situation, but we needed to get out and assess the situation. Don didn't know this, but I got an emergency tunnel drilled under his house, while he was vacationing with his family over the holidays. I hated doing things behind his back, but it was for the best. There were too many people that wanted to hurt me, and getting to Don would be the best way to go about it.
Don was silent and still. I pulled a silencer from the bedpost and motioned for Don to follow me. He froze and stayed in the same spot. I heard footfalls on the steps. I kissed Don and mouthed, "Trust me." He nodded and we inched our way out of the door.
The body that came up from the steps was bulky and loud. A man around 6'2 with a bad smoking habit. I could sense the man's nerves he was extremely calm. He was bait. Someone else, someone quieter and more deadly was behind him. I would take them out first.
I motioned for Don to go into the bathroom. I followed. We looked out of the window and I noticed a familiar car. Son of a BITCH.
"LUUUCIFERRR, BRING YOUR ASS IN HERE NOW!"
Don stepped back. I motioned for him to follow me and we walked out of the bathroom. The big guy was standing on my right and the silent one on my left. "Well Nano, I know you, but who is this big bitch here."
Nano removed her mask, her dark hair falling around her face, "I am sorry. Lucifer said you wanted an escape from your relationship. Did you not plan this?"
I felt my body heat leave me. My anger turned my blood into ice. "Where is he?"
We walked down to the living room and Lucifer was sitting on the couch. I unloaded my full clip in his chest. "You bastard. I still have one in the chamber. Don't fuck with me right now." I kept my gun on him while he doubled over in pain. He removed his vest and started to laugh in between gasps.
"Why the fuck did you do this?" The air got colder. Lucifer smiled, making his scar on his face more prominent.
"I wanted to make sure you were completely dedicated to your family. You don't need this deadweight holding you the fuck back. I'M DOING YOUR ASS A FAVOR!"
I pulled the trigger aiming at his head, it would be quick and easy to snap his fucking head off while the bullet pushed its way through the thick metal. Santino walked in and took the gun out if my hand.
I reached my hand back for Don and to my surprise, he embraced me. "Are you okay Kit? Are they all with you? Is this the family you talked about?"
I nodded. I felt his heartbeat steady against my back. His heart should be pounding, but he accepted me and my profession. His body was warm. "Hey dumbass!" I directed my anger at Lucifer.
"You ruined another head! YOU RUINED ANOTHER FUCKING HEAD!" Lucifer was frantic and he began to shift. His body turning from steel to rock, back to the flesh he donned for friendly conversation. "You stupid a…"
Santino stepped in between us. He was silent, but I knew the look he was giving Lucifer. It was one that made lesser men quake. Lucifer was definitely and lesser man. Santino disliked Lucifer, and if I remember correctly, so did my father.
Lucifer had undergone some extensive bioengineering experiments that made him more machine than man. His head was completely mechanical, his brain no longer attached to it. His body could transform between different forms of matter, his preferences were steel and rock. I do not know where he got these experiments done or how it was even possible but he did share some of technology with my team all of them had some sort of enhanced abilities, partially due to me sharing my blood with them all.
Don grabbed my hand and I moved closer to him. "Santino, did you let Lucifer tell the others the plan for tonight?"
"My mistake."
"No. It's definitely his. Who is this big guy? I don't know him." I eyed the big beast again. He hadn't said a word. I wasn't even sure he was breathing.
The cigarette smoker walked up to me. "I'm Amigo. I got recruited by Lucifer a few weeks ago. This is my first-time meeting anyone else." He took a deep breath.
"SERAPH!!" I waited and a beautiful woman appeared. My guardian angel. If Santino was my right hand, Seraph was definitely my left. She materialized in a dark cloud of scentless smoke. "Please take Don back to my house." She nodded and disappeared with Don. We didn't even get to say goodbye. "Lucifer, please explain why everyone is here and not at my house preparing for our stakeouts. Also, who the fuck gave you permission to recruit anyone? I don't know or trust this man." I walked over to him and felt my hands turn icy. I wanted to murder Lucifer he has never attempted something so reckless. He threated my relationship and risked my happiness.
I took a deep breath and went to sit on the couch. I wanted everyone to suffer, no one should have listened to this asshole. An instant chill went down everyone's spine. My parents were extraordinary, and left me with a series of supernatural abilities. I remember my father freezing things around the house and my mother telling him I was too young to know how to use my abilities. I wish they had taught me early. I feel that I could do more, but this is all I can accomplish for now.
Lucifer smiled. I swear this man is a maniac. "I just wanted Don to know the real you, but it seems like I was bit too late."
Santino looked at me. I was silent. I told Don everything, well with the exception of the guns, the vest and the tunnel, but I would have told him in time.
"Kit, Do you want to explain?" Lucifer's skin was fractured and seemed to be glitching. His eyes empty and dark.
"Lucifer, I don't have to explain anything to you." Icicles began to form in the air as the moisture around us began to freeze. "I told Don about us all five years ago. He knows everything. I wanted him to be with me knowing everything. I was one-hundred percent transparent with him for his safety and mine." Santino sat next to me. His heat was calming, but a sure sign of his anger.
Everyone looked back at me surprised. Santino spoke, "Let's talk about the stakeouts. Seraph will stay with Don, in case any of you want to listen to Lucifer's bullshit again. Lucifer will be detained with the bare minimal sustenance to stay alive, until further notice. Amigo, you will stay with Nano and Jolly tonight, looking over the bread factory." I needed to know more about Amigo, "Tomorrow, you will be with me and Kit to determine your loyalty. Nano, Jolly, if he causes any issues or doesn't follow your orders. Eliminate him. Immediately." Santino didn't miss a beat.
Lucifer laughed. Everyone else nodded and left for their assignments.
