Chapter 22 - Chapter 22 Before the Change

The first light of dawn filtered through the trees, casting a golden hue over the clearing. Dew sparkled on the leaves, a delicate reminder of the new day, but Opal felt no comfort in its beauty. Her chest felt heavy, weighed down by the choice that loomed before them.

She sat cross-legged on the cool ground, her back pressed against a rough tree trunk. Her fingers absentmindedly played with the crescent moon charm on her bracelet, the metal warm from her touch. Her brothers were scattered around the clearing, each lost in their own thoughts, their faces shadowed with worry.

Forrest was the first to break the silence, his voice uncharacteristically somber. "I can't believe it's tonight. Our first shift. I thought… I thought we'd be home for this." His shoulders sagged, his usual spark dimmed. "It's supposed to be a celebration. The whole pack should be there."

Opal's heart twisted. She could see the longing in his eyes, the ache for the traditions they'd grown up hearing about. A first shift was more than just a physical change. It was a rite of passage, a celebration of becoming one with the wolf inside. It was supposed to be surrounded by loved ones, cheered on by the pack as they welcomed the new wolves into adulthood.

But for them, everything was different.

Ridge leaned against a tree, his amber eyes dark and thoughtful. "If we go back… if we go home…" His voice faltered, his jaw clenching. "We'll put them in danger. We've been running for weeks, hiding from Azeala. If we go back now, she'll find us. She'll find them."

Ash's face was stone, his silver eyes flashing with anger. "We shouldn't have to hide. This is our right. Our pack should be there. They should be by our side when we shift." His fists tightened, his body coiled with tension. "I won't let that witch take this from us."

Opal swallowed, her throat tight. "It's not just about us. If we go back… and she follows… she'll destroy everything. She'll kill them, Ash. Every last one." Her voice broke, her eyes burning with tears. "I can't… I can't live with that."

Forrest's face crumpled, his usual bravado gone. "But… I don't want to be alone. We're supposed to do this with them. With Mom… and Dad… and the whole pack." His shoulders shook, his voice cracking. "I don't want to do this out here… in the middle of nowhere."

Brooks moved to sit beside him, his hand resting on Forrest's shoulder. His voice was quiet, haunted. "I don't want that either. But… Opal's right. If Azeala finds us… if she attacks while we're shifting…" His eyes were wide, his face pale. "We won't be able to protect them. We won't be able to protect anyone."

Ash's jaw tightened, his eyes blazing. "So what? We just… run? Hide out here like cowards?" He kicked at the dirt, his anger raw and sharp. "This is our home. Our pack. I won't run from her."

Opal's heart ached, her own fear and anger bubbling to the surface. "You think I want this? You think I don't want to be with them?" Her voice shook, her pain laid bare. "I want Mom. I want Dad. I want to be home, surrounded by our family, celebrating the way it's supposed to be." Her fists clenched, her nails biting into her palms. "But if we go back… we're signing their death warrant. And I won't do that. I won't be the reason they die."

Ridge's face softened, his eyes filled with sorrow. "None of us want that, Opal. But she's right, Ash. If we go back… we'll be leading Azeala straight to them. We can't take that risk."

Ash's shoulders slumped, his defiance crumbling. "I just… I hate this. I hate that she's taken everything from us. Our home, our family, our pack… even this." His voice broke, his pain raw and jagged. "We were supposed to do this together. All of us. With the pack cheering us on… like it's supposed to be."

Opal's chest tightened, her heart aching. She moved to his side, wrapping her arms around him, holding him close. "I know. I hate it too. But we're still together. We still have each other. No matter where we are… we're still a pack."

Forrest looked up, his eyes rimmed with tears. "But… what if something goes wrong? What if we can't control it? What if… what if we hurt each other?"

A shiver ran through Opal. It was the fear that had been haunting her ever since they realized the shift was coming. The first shift was unpredictable, painful, and dangerous. If they lost control… if they turned on each other…

Brooks's voice was quiet, trembling. "There won't be anyone to help us. No one to guide us. We'll be on our own."

Elena stepped forward, her expression gentle but firm. "You won't be alone. I'll be here. I'll watch over you. I'll keep you safe."

Ridge looked at her, his face conflicted. "But… what if Azeala finds us? You can't fight her alone. If she attacks while we're shifting…" His voice faltered, his fear raw and exposed. "We'll be defenseless. We won't be able to protect you."

Elena's face softened, her resolve unwavering. "I chose this path the moment I helped Opal escape. I knew the risks then, and I know them now. I'm not leaving you." Her voice was steady, her eyes fierce. "You're not alone. Not while I'm here."

Forrest sniffed, wiping at his eyes. "I just… I wanted it to be different. I wanted it to be like Dad's stories. With the pack… with Mom… with all of us together."

Ash's face softened, his anger melting away. "I did too. But… Forrest's right. We're not ready. Not to do this alone."

Ridge looked at them, his face torn. "If we go back… we'll be stronger. The pack… they'd protect us. They'd keep us safe while we shift."

Brooks hesitated, his voice shaking. "But… they'll die for us. They'll fight for us… and they'll die. I can't… I can't let that happen."

Opal's chest tightened, her voice a whisper. "I can't either. But… Elena's right. There's power in numbers. If we're with the pack… Azeala might hesitate. She might think twice before attacking."

Ridge looked at her, his eyes filled with uncertainty. "But… is that a risk we're willing to take? If we're wrong… if she attacks… we won't be able to protect them."

Ash's shoulders sagged, his voice weary. "And if we stay out here… we'll be alone. If something goes wrong… no one will be there to help us."

The silence that followed was heavy, suffocating. They were trapped between fear and duty, between love and sacrifice. There was no right answer. No safe choice.

Opal took a deep breath, her heart aching. "We stay here." Her voice was firm, steady. "We stay away from the pack. We protect them by staying away. We face this alone… together."

Ash looked at her, his eyes dark and haunted. "You're sure? If something goes wrong…"

Opal's voice trembled, but her resolve was unshakable. "If something goes wrong… we face it together. No matter what."

Forrest wiped at his eyes, his voice small. "I'm scared."

Opal wrapped her arms around him, holding him close. "Me too. But we'll get through this. Together."

One by one, her brothers joined them, forming a circle, their hearts beating as one. They stood there, united in fear and hope, in love and pain.

Tonight, they would face the shift. Tonight, they would become wolves.

And no matter what happened, they would face it together.
