The drive to the diner was surprisingly comfortable, the tension from the pack house melting away as they left the familiar territory behind. The small diner sat on the edge of town, nestled between tall pines, its faded sign swaying gently in the morning breeze. It was quaint, charming even, with white shutters and flower boxes under each window.
Opal looked out the window, her chest tightening. I've passed by this place a hundred times... but I've never stopped here before.
Kael parked the car and jumped out, moving swiftly to her side to open the door. Opal's cheeks flushed, her heart pounding. "You... you don't have to do that."
Kael smiled, his blue eyes sparkling. "I know... but I want to." He offered his hand, his touch warm, his grip firm. "Come on... the pancakes here are legendary."
Opal's stomach rumbled, her face turning bright red. "I... I could eat." She took his hand, letting him help her out of the car, her chest tightening. Why does his touch feel... so warm?
