Chapter 14 - The Dishonest Friend

Katherine's POV

He was crazy.

No, I was crazy.

I wouldn't have agreed to his plan if I knew. I knew I was fooling around with that thought. I would have agreed to his plan still even if I had known. For my baby.

I smiled as I rubbed my hands over my stomach.

My little baby. It had changed my life suddenly but I couldn't help myself from getting attached to it.

My little bump.

"Are you still there, Katherine?"

I blinked and zoomed back into the present. "Yeah, I heard you, Jack."

He sighed like he didn't want to be on call with me. "I hate to disturb you too."

"But it's stated in the contract that I have to do everything to make sure your goal is achieved just as you have to fulfill your end of the bargain as well." I completed the words he couldn't get out.

I had everything in the contract memorized. I guessed I didn't want him to pull out anything I wasn't prepared for.

"Cool. Will I see you tonight then? Hope it's not a bother? Hope I'm not ruining your plans for the night?"

He sounded like he was going to have a heart attack if I told him I wasn't going to be available.

I didn't have any plans for the night but I wasn't going to tell him that.

"You are lucky I find George sweet." I said. "I will be there."

I didn't want to deal with his family again so soon but wasn't about to lose our contract as soon as I secured it.

He sent me money that night after leaving his grandfather's party and I couldn't stop the shitty grin that had been on my face all through the night.

I had gone to bed dreaming of Disneyland and unicorns.

I had no doubt that he was also going to pay for this unexpected outing so why would I have to complain?

The more the merrier. George could have as much parties as he wanted and request for me, I didn't care. I wasn't about to hate him for making me richer.

He groaned. "Please don't call my grandfather sweet. I don't need that image in my head."

I chuckled. "Jealous of your old man." I said surprising myself. I didn't know where I got the nerve to tease him.

He snorted. "Don't be ridiculous. See you tonight. I will pick you up."

"No problem." I said and ended the call.

He had sent me a text thirty minutes earlier that he was on his way and would soon be at my place. I was done getting ready and waiting for him.

I heard the doorbell ring and ran to the door, thinking it was him and wondering what made him rush.

I deluded myself that he couldn't wait to see me.

The smile on my face froze when I saw the ones at the door.

"You look like you saw ghosts." Lisa said as they walked into the house.

"Because I wasn't expecting you."

Agatha snorted. "Because I wasn't expecting you." She mimicked me. "When did you ever expect us? That has never been a problem. You sound like you don't want us here."

"I sound like that not because I don't want you girls here but I'm going out soon." I blushed before blurting out the words. "I am going out with Jack."

"A date?" Lisa smiled.

"No. Going with him to his grandfather's party."

"Wow." Agatha gasped. "I can't believe how smitten he is with you."

I smiled. If only she knew better.

"Yeah, he is." I kept up the lie.

It was going to be hard to explain why my marriage failed when my deal with Jack was over. I hoped my girls had enough tissues because I was going to need a whole lot of it.

"I'm glad you are in a happy relationship even if it's taking you from us."

I doubted it was the right moment to tell them that I was getting married next week. They were going to be mad that I waited long to tell them.

I knew it wasn't going to help me if I delayed telling them but I didn't have the time right now.

"I'm sorry, girls." I checked the time. "He will soon be here."

"Make sure you give us all the gist when you come back."

I nodded though I wondered what I would tell them. If one was in a fake relationship, it was hard to make up juicy gossip for friends.

"I will." I lied.

I would have to make research about what was expected in a relationship with billionaire boyfriends and tell Lisa and Agatha.

I hoped my lies didn't bite me in the ass and if they did, I hoped they didn't bite my ass off.

I heard the door bell ring and forced a smile on my face. For a reason, I didn't want Jack in the same room with my friends.

Why did he choose to come up to the door tonight?

He could have sent me a text that he was around as he did the other night and I would have gladly wished my friends good night and hopped out.

I prayed that it was Taylor at the door and not Jack but I knew I was throwing a wide aim in the air. I doubted Taylor would be working this late.

I opened the door and stared at the guy who I wished wasn't there.

"Hey," I breathed.

"Are you ready?" he asked.

"I thought you would send me a text." I whispered.

"Annoyed I'm here instead?" he scowled.

"I'm not. I just wasn't expecting you."

"Let's go." He sighed. "I don't want to fight with you."

Neither do I.

"Let me get my bag."

"Is that your boyfriend?" Agatha asked just as I was closing the door.

I winced. "Yes. We are late for the party. I will see you girls soon."

"We can say hi while you get your bag."

Before I could say anything else, they both jumped off the couch and rushed outside.

"Good evening," I heard Lisa say a moment later.

I groaned, imagining the look that would have been on Jack's face when he saw them.

I dashed to my bedroom, picked the bag and rushed out before the girls did any damage unintentionally. I didn't even check myself out in the mirror a final time as I used to do.

I got to the living room and I wanted to swoon.

Jack was in my apartment.

Agatha saw the look on my face. "We felt it was rude to keep him outside." She explained.

I nodded and quickly forced a smile on my face. I hoped she hadn't realized that the expression on my face few moments ago wasn't surprise that Jack was in but horror.

Jack was in my apartment. He was in my apartment. I literally screamed in my head. I couldn't believe it. I knew my friends had probably dragged him inside but it was a shock that he had allowed himself to be dragged inside.

He could have made an excuse for them. He should have. Why did he come inside?

I hated myself for thinking of his actions as a big deal when they weren't. He probably wanted to see where I lived.

I knew I did well for myself but suddenly having him in my space made me feel poor, like my apartment wasn't up to standard.

I shouldn't think low of myself.

Lisa glanced between me and Jack and chuckled. "I thought you were late for the party. Why are you both standing there and not making a move?"

"He might be shy because of us." Agatha chuckled. "You don't have to pretend you haven't been in here before."

"Like?" Lisa drawled, chuckling. "I don't even want to think of all the dirty things they must have done here together."

I blushed. Why did Lisa have to be naughty now?

Jack cleared his throat. "We have to go now. Babe." He called, glancing at me.

I blinked, transfixed in space without moving.

"Sweet pie." He tried again.

I almost laughed at his funny endearment when I realized he was talking to me. I blushed as I made my way to him and slipped my fingers into his.

My girls giggled at the blush on my face, assuming I was so in love.

I walked out with Jack to his car with only one thought in my head.
