**Chapter 47: Guardian of Shadows**

Carlo stood in the grove, his lantern casting long shadows against the lavender bushes. The crypt and the chapel felt like distant worlds now, though their secrets weighed heavily on his mind. He clenched the ornate box in his hands, its contents a reminder of the promise he had made to Emilia—and the burden he had carried ever since.

For years, Carlo had served as the vineyard's constable, ensuring its peace and order. But his role extended far beyond what anyone knew. He was not just a keeper of law; he was a guardian of the vineyard's hidden truths—a legacy Emilia had entrusted to him on the night she disappeared.

"You must protect it, Carlo," Emilia had whispered, her voice urgent and trembling. "No one else can know. Not yet."

Her words haunted him still, echoing in his mind as he paced through the grove. The pendant, the vial, the crypt—they were all pieces of a puzzle he had sworn to protect, even if it meant deceiving those he cared about. But now, with the siblings and their allies uncovering more than he had anticipated, Carlo felt the walls closing in.

He stopped by the fountain, his eyes scanning the darkened vineyard. The shadows seemed to move with a life of their own, reminding him of the danger that lurked beneath the surface. He pulled the pendant from his pocket, its intricate design glinting in the lantern light. It was a symbol of the vineyard's power—and its curse.

Carlo's thoughts were interrupted by the sound of footsteps. He turned sharply, his hand instinctively reaching for his sidearm. From the shadows, Pietro emerged, his expression unreadable.

"Still playing the protector, Carlo?" Pietro said, his tone laced with mockery.

Carlo's jaw tightened as he faced the man who had once been his closest ally. "What do you want, Pietro?" he asked coldly.

"The same thing you do," Pietro replied. "To keep this vineyard from destroying itself. But your way? It's not working anymore."

Carlo frowned, his grip on the pendant tightening. "You don't understand what's at stake."

Pietro's gaze darkened. "Oh, I understand perfectly. You've spent years guarding secrets that should have died with Emilia. But now they're coming to light, and you can't stop it. You're just delaying the inevitable."

Carlo stepped closer, his voice low and sharp. "Those secrets were meant to protect this vineyard—and everyone tied to it. If they come out, it won't just destroy the DeVinci legacy. It will destroy us all."

Pietro shrugged, his indifference clear. "Maybe it's time someone paid the price."

As Pietro disappeared into the shadows, Carlo stood alone, his thoughts racing. He knew he couldn't keep the vineyard's secrets buried forever. But as he looked at the pendant in his hand, he realized he had one final move to make—one that could either save them all or doom them to the vineyard's dark legacy.
