Chapter 62 - Chapter 63:The guardian’s Dilemma

**Chapter 63: The Guardian's Dilemma**

Carlo stood in the secluded corner of the vineyard, the ornate box resting on the ground beside him. The moonlight danced on the surface of the ancient stone emblem carved into the base of the crypt, its intricate design shimmering faintly. Carlo's gaze was fixed on the vial in his hand, its liquid glinting like molten silver.

The siblings were inching closer to the truth, their determination impossible to ignore. Carlo admired their courage—it reminded him of Emilia—but he also feared the consequences. The vineyard wasn't just a place; it was a force tied to their legacy, and revealing its secrets would mean shattering the delicate balance that had sustained it for generations.

As Carlo tilted the vial in his hand, his thoughts drifted to Emilia's final words. She had entrusted him with the responsibility of protecting the vineyard's secrets, warning him that the cost of failure would ripple through the family. It wasn't just about preserving the vineyard's prosperity; it was about safeguarding the legacy itself—the roots that ran deep beneath the estate.

"They don't understand," Carlo muttered, his voice low and strained. "Not yet."

He knelt beside the crypt's seal, his fingers tracing the emblem's edges. Beneath the surface lay a truth that had haunted him since Emilia's passing. He had promised her he would protect it, but the siblings' relentless pursuit threatened to unravel everything he had worked to preserve.

Carlo's gaze hardened as he placed the vial back inside the ornate box, securing its contents with deliberate care. He couldn't stop the siblings from uncovering the chamber near the river—but he could ensure they approached it with caution. The pendant, the vial, and the chamber were all pieces of the puzzle, but Emilia's warnings lingered in his mind.

"Trust is fragile," she had written. "Protect it, or it will break."

Carlo's thoughts were interrupted by the sound of footsteps behind him. He turned sharply, his hand instinctively reaching for the sidearm at his waist. From the shadows emerged Pietro, his expression unreadable.

"Still playing the guardian, Carlo?" Pietro said, his tone tinged with mockery. "How long do you think you can keep them in the dark?"

Carlo stiffened, his resolve unyielding. "I'm not keeping them in the dark. I'm protecting them."

Pietro smirked, stepping closer. "Protecting them from what? The truth? Or yourself?"

Carlo's jaw tightened, his fists clenching at his sides. "The truth is more dangerous than you realize, Pietro. And if they uncover it without understanding the cost, it'll destroy them."

"And you think you can control that?" Pietro countered, his voice sharp. "You're not the only one who cares about this vineyard, Carlo. But unlike you, I won't let fear stop me from facing the truth."

The two men stood in tense silence, their shared history and opposing views creating an unspoken battle. Carlo finally turned away, his voice steady but heavy with emotion.

"If you want to face the truth, Pietro, then do it," Carlo said quietly. "But don't say I didn't warn you."

As Pietro disappeared into the shadows, Carlo closed the ornate box and rose to his feet. His hidden intentions were clear: he would guide the siblings toward the chamber, but he would ensure they understood the cost before they uncovered the vineyard's full truth.
