Chapter 34 - The Center's Arrival

The stone maw of the tower swallowed Team 7, depositing them into a vast, echoing chamber. The air crackled with a nervous tension, a palpable mix of exhaustion and adrenaline. Surviving genin teams milled about, their faces etched with the trials of the Forest of Death.

Rock Lee, his green jumpsuit tattered and stained, bounced on the balls of his feet, his eyes burning with an almost manic intensity. "Youth! We have conquered the Forest of Death! Now, let us show them the power of our youthful spirit!" Neji Hyuga, his Byakugan active, scanned the room with a cold, analytical gaze, his lips pressed into a thin line. Tenten meticulously cleaned and resheathed her weapons, her expression grim.

Kiba Inuzuka, his grin wide and boisterous, nudged Akamaru, who barked excitedly. "We're gonna tear 'em apart, Akamaru! They won't know what hit 'em!" Hinata Hyuga, stood quietly, her gaze darting nervously around the room. Shino Aburame, his voice a low, droning monotone, stated, "The insect colony has detected a high concentration of nervous pheromones. An interesting observation."

Shikamaru Nara, his brow furrowed, sighed dramatically. "What a drag," he muttered, slouching against a wall. Ino Yamanaka, her eyes fixed on Sasuke, whispered to Choji, "Something's wrong with him. He's… different." Choji Akimichi, his hands trembling slightly, nervously munched on a bag of chips.

Gaara, his sand gourd slung over his shoulder, stood apart, radiating an almost palpable menace. Kankuro, a wicked smirk playing on his lips, adjusted his puppet, Karasu. Temari, her fan resting against her shoulder, scoffed, "Amateurs. They're all amateurs."

A team of Rain genin stood in a silent cluster, their expressions unreadable, their eyes cold and calculating.

Kabuto Yakushi, his glasses glinting in the dim light, maintained a detached, almost clinical demeanor. He observed everything with a quiet intensity, his gaze lingering on Sasuke's dark pulsating curse mark. He then focused on Naruto. 'The Kyuubi's chakra is getting stable.'

Sasuke, his expression a mask of concentration, stood apart from his teammates. The dark pattern of the Curse Mark pulsed on his neck, a raw, untamed energy that he was trying to master. 'Why is the system helping me control this?' he thought, his brow furrowed. :What does it want?'

Naruto, his voice loud and confused, tried to piece together the events. "What happened? Where are we? Did we pass?"

Sakura, her face pale but determined, tried to maintain a semblance of calm. "We passed, Naruto. We're at the tower."

The heavy doors of the chamber swung open, and Hiruzen Sarutobi entered, accompanied by Asuma Sarutobi, Kurenai Yuhi, Might Guy, and Kakashi Hatake and several other jonins.

An immediate silence fell over the room. Hiruzen's presence commanded respect, his gaze sweeping over the assembled genin. His eyes lingered on Sasuke, then on Naruto, and finally, on Kabuto, a brief, almost imperceptible glare.

"Genin," Hiruzen's voice resonated through the chamber, "you have survived the trials of the Forest of Death. You have proven your resilience, your determination." He paused, his gaze hardening. "But the Chunin Exams are not a test of survival alone. They are a test of skill, of strength, of resolve. And many of you… are not ready."

Kabuto, his eyes flickered to a small insect that had landed on his hand. He then activated a small jutsu, and the insect flew away, towards the forest.

With a message,"Orochimaru-sama, I have observed a significant anomaly in Sasuke's condition. The Curse Mark, while active, is being influenced by an external energy source. This energy is not yours. It is rapidly accelerating his control over the seal, and it appears to have completely eradicated the fragment of your soul that was inside. I do not know the nature of this energy, but it is powerful and… unusual. I recommend extreme caution."

"Therefore," Hiruzen continued, "to narrow down the remaining genin, we will hold preliminary matches." He gestured towards a raised platform at the far end of the chamber.

"These battles will determine who proceeds to the final stage. Prepare yourselves. The first match will begin shortly."

A palpable tension filled the air, a sense of anticipation and apprehension. The genin braced themselves, their eyes fixed on the platform, their minds racing with strategies and calculations. The Chunin Exams were far from over.
