Chapter 10 - The Calm Before the Chaos

The next morning, sunlight streamed gently through the curtains of Camilla's room, painting golden lines across the wooden floor.

Drew lay beside her on the couch, eyes closed but his hand wrapped protectively around hers, fingers entwined as if letting go might undo the fragile peace they'd just found.

Camilla was already awake, staring at their joined hands.

Everything had changed and the change felt overwhelming.

In a single night, the weight of their history had shifted. From pain to possibility. From loss to something… more. And yet, the revelation of her pregnancy still buzzed like electricity beneath her skin.

She turned to face him. "You're awake."

His eyes fluttered open. "I am now."

There was a long pause before he whispered, "I keep thinking I'll wake up and it'll all be gone. Like the rest of it. Like you."

Camilla reached out and gently touched his face. "I'm not going anywhere. Not this time."

Drew leaned into her touch. "When I saw that ultrasound, I felt something I haven't felt in years. I didn't just remember. I felt alive. Like I had something real to fight for."

Camilla smiled faintly. "You do. But Drew… everything's about to get a lot more complicated. You're still engaged to her in the public eye. The media, the company, the legal mess, it's all going to blow up."

He nodded slowly. "Let it."

She raised a brow. "You sure about that?"

"I'm not letting anyone control me again. Especially not her. I'm going to break the story before she has the chance to twist it."

He sat up, rubbing his hand down his face. "We'll go back tomorrow. I'll call a press conference and tell the truth."

Camilla's heart clenched. "You're ready for that?"

He looked at her, his expression determined. "I have to be. For you. For our baby. For us."

Later that day, Lila joined them at a seaside café, raising a brow as she sat across from the reunited couple.

"Well, well," she said, folding her arms. "You two look disgustingly peaceful. Are we finally done torturing ourselves?"

Camilla chuckled. "Not quite. We're heading back tomorrow. Drew wants to face everything."

Lila's gaze shifted to Drew. "You ready for that kind of war, Mr. billionaire? You are a popular figure and this could taint your image"

Drew's tone was steel. "Bring it on."

Lila smirked. "Good. Because Tanis isn't going to go down without burning half the city with her. You know that, right?"

Drew's jaw tightened. "Let her try."

Camilla reached for her tea, but paused mid-sip. "We should plan for every possibility.

Tanis has always been spoilt and pampered."

"She's always had her way with things and always feels entitled to what's not hers."

"She knows too much and she's probably got backups. She's vicious when cornered."

Lila nodded. "I've already talked to Leo. He's assembling everything we need, witness statements, recorded calls, footage. It's all going public."

"Speaking of Leo, you owe him a handsome apology. That guy went through hell in the hands of Tanis but stood firm as a friend should" Camilla chipped in.

Drew sighed, "Tanis has done me a lot of harm. I should be suing her really"

He looked at Camilla. "There's something else I've been thinking about too."

She tilted her head. "What?"

He hesitated. "Marriage."

She choked slightly on her drink. "Excuse me?"

He smiled softly. "I know it's sudden, and I know we've been through hell, but I've lost you once, Camilla. I'm not doing it again. I want our baby to grow up knowing we fought for this, for each other."

Camilla's heart swelled and twisted at the same time. "You don't need to propose to fix things."

"I know. I want to do it because I love you. Because I remember what it felt like to hold you and know I was home. Because this baby deserves to see what real love looks like."

She was silent for a moment, tears rising. Then—

"I'm not saying no."

He grinned. "So that's a maybe?"

"That's a 'we'll talk about it when the war is over.'"

He reached across the table and squeezed her hand.

Back in the city, Tanis stood in front of her penthouse mirror, her perfectly manicured nails tapping her phone in irritation. The public was turning on her, fast.

The investigation had begun to unearth threads she thought she buried years ago.

Her lawyers warned her the case was strong.

Too strong.

She needed to act.

She needed Drew back on her side.

And if not… she needed to make Camilla disappear.

She dialed a number. The line picked up after two rings.

"Phase two," she said.

"Yes, ma'am," came the reply. "She won't see it coming."

Tanis stared at her reflection, lips curling into a smile that didn't reach her eyes.

The next evening, Drew and Camilla arrived back in the city. As the car pulled into the underground garage of his penthouse, a familiar figure stepped out of the shadows.

Leo.

"Welcome home," he said, offering Camilla a warm hug and clapping Drew on the back.

"We've got everything ready. You speak tomorrow at ten. Live stream across all networks. Press, investors, public, all eyes on you."

Drew nodded. "Perfect."

Leo's expression darkened. "But be ready. Tanis isn't going down without blood."

Camilla felt a chill crawl up her spine.

That night, Drew stood on the balcony of his penthouse, staring out at the city that had once worshipped him, and now watched him like a predator waiting to pounce.

Camilla joined him, her hand sliding into his.

"Whatever happens tomorrow," she said, "you won't face it alone."

He turned to her, pressing a soft kiss to her temple. "We've got this. We've already survived worse."

She looked out at the skyline, hand unconsciously resting on her stomach. "Tomorrow, the truth becomes unshakable. No more lies. No more masks."

Drew smiled. "Just us. Raw and real."

And under the stars, as the city lights blinked in anticipation, they stood united, on the edge of war, with love as their only shield.
