Chapter 61
The tension in the palace grew heavier with each passing day. Ling had always been patient, but this silence between them was becoming unbearable.
Ping acted as though he wasn't there. She went about her days without sparing him a glance, always keeping her distance. Even Mei noticed it, throwing Ling worried glances whenever Ping would leave the room without acknowledging his presence.
He knew she was hurting. He knew she felt betrayed. But how long was she going to keep punishing him?
Late at night, he found himself once again standing outside her chamber. He wanted to knock, to go inside and make her listen, but something held him back. He didn't want to force her, but neither could he continue like this.
Instead, he leaned against the door and exhaled. "Are you really going to keep ignoring me forever?" His voice was low, almost tired.
There was no response.
Ling let out a humorless chuckle. "I see… then I suppose I'll just keep talking until you're ready to listen."
The silence stretched between them. He knew she was awake. He knew she could hear him.
"I never wanted to marry her. You know that, don't you?" His voice softened. "I fought it. I refused it. But the moment I found out you left, none of it mattered anymore. I would have burned the entire kingdom down if it meant bringing you back."
Still, no answer.
Ling sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "I miss you, Ping." His voice dropped to a whisper. "Even if you never forgive me, I'll still be here. I'll always be here."
He waited for a response, but none came. After a long moment, he pushed away from the door and walked away.
Inside the chamber, Ping sat curled up on the bed, her hands resting on her stomach. She had heard every word.
And for the first time in weeks, her heart wavered.
