Chapter 19 - shadows of confessions

Vinny leaned against the counter of his apartment's modest kitchen, nursing a cup of coffee that had long since gone cold. The events of the past few days played on a loop in his mind—Matthew's touch, his words, the undeniable shift in their dynamic. It was intoxicating and terrifying in equal measure.

A sharp knock at the door jolted him from his thoughts. He set the mug down and made his way to the door, peering through the peephole. Tom stood on the other side, his expression unreadable.

Vinny hesitated before unlocking the door. "Tom. Didn't expect to see you."

Tom stepped inside without waiting for an invitation, his eyes scanning the room. "We need to talk."

Vinny closed the door, a sense of unease settling in his stomach. "About what?"

Tom turned to face him, his gaze intense. "About Matthew."

Vinny's heart skipped a beat. "What about him?"

Tom took a step closer, his voice low. "I know you've been seeing him. And I know it's more than just casual."

Vinny crossed his arms over his chest, attempting to mask his anxiety. "I don't see how that's any of your business."

Tom's jaw tightened. "It is when he's not who he says he is."

Vinny frowned. "What are you talking about?"

Tom pulled out his phone, scrolling through it before holding it up for Vinny to see. "I did some digging. Matthew's got a past—a shady one. Deals that went south, people who disappeared after getting involved with him."

Vinny took the phone, scanning the screen. Articles and forum posts painted a picture of a man entangled in dubious activities, none of which aligned with the Matthew he knew.

He looked up, meeting Tom's gaze. "This doesn't prove anything."

Tom sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Vinny, I'm your friend. I'm looking out for you. Just... be careful."

Vinny nodded slowly. "I appreciate your concern, but I can handle myself."

Tom studied him for a moment before nodding. "Alright. Just remember, I'm here if you need me."

After Tom left, Vinny sank onto the couch, the weight of the information pressing down on him. He needed clarity, and there was only one person who could provide it.

The dimly lit bar was nearly empty, the scent of stale beer lingering in the air. Vinny spotted Kieran at a corner table, nursing a drink and scribbling in a worn notebook.

"Kieran," Vinny greeted, sliding into the seat across from him.

Kieran looked up, a slow smile spreading across his face. "Vinny. To what do I owe the pleasure?"

Vinny sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "I need your perspective on something."

Kieran closed his notebook, giving Vinny his full attention. "Shoot."

"It's about Matthew," Vinny began, hesitating. "Tom came to me with some... concerning information about his past."

Kieran's expression remained neutral. "And you're wondering if you should confront Matthew about it?"

Vinny nodded. "Yeah. But I don't know how to approach it."

Kieran leaned back, swirling the liquid in his glass. "Trust is a delicate thing. If you value what you have with Matthew, you'll talk to him. But be prepared for answers you might not like."

Vinny exhaled slowly. "I just don't want to ruin what we have."

Kieran's eyes softened. "Sometimes, facing the truth is the only way to move forward."

Vinny offered a small smile. "Thanks, Kieran. I needed that."

Kieran nodded, returning to his notebook as Vinny stood to leave.

Vinny paced his apartment, the weight of his decision pressing heavily on his chest. The room felt stifling, each tick of the clock amplifying his anxiety. He knew he couldn't put it off any longer.

Grabbing his phone, he dialed Matthew's number. It rang twice before he picked up.

"Vinny," Matthew's voice was warm, but there was an undertone of concern. "Everything okay?"

Vinny took a deep breath, steadying himself. "We need to talk. Can you come over?"

There was a brief pause. "I'll be there in twenty."

True to his word, Matthew arrived promptly, his presence filling the room with an energy that was both comforting and unsettling. He took one look at Vinny's tense posture and frowned.

"What's going on?" Matthew asked, stepping closer.

Vinny met his gaze, searching for any hint of deception. "Tom came to me. He told me some things about your past. Things that don't add up."

Matthew's expression darkened, a flicker of something unreadable passing through his eyes. "What did he tell you?"

"That you've been involved in shady deals. That people have disappeared after getting involved with you," Vinny said, his voice barely above a whisper.

Matthew sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Vinny, my past is... complicated. There are things I've done that I'm not proud of."

Vinny's heart clenched. "Then tell me. I need to know."

Matthew hesitated, then nodded. "Alright. But you might not like what you hear."

They sat on the couch, the space between them feeling vast despite their proximity.

"Years ago, I got involved with some people who operated on the fringes of legality," Matthew began. "At first, it was just business—nothing personal. But things escalated. Deals went south, and I had to make choices to protect myself."

Vinny listened intently, his mind racing.

"Some of those choices led to people getting hurt," Matthew admitted, his voice heavy with regret. "I distanced myself from that life, but the shadows of it still linger."

Vinny absorbed the confession, his emotions a whirlwind of confusion and fear.

"Why didn't you tell me?" Vinny asked, his voice trembling.

Matthew reached out, taking Vinny's hand in his. "Because I didn't want to drag you into that darkness. I wanted to be someone better for you."

Tears welled in Vinny's eyes as he squeezed Matthew's hand. "I don't know what to do with this, Matthew."

Matthew's grip tightened. "I understand. But know this—I care about you deeply. And I would never do anything to harm you."

Vinny nodded slowly, the weight of the revelation settling over him. "I need time to process this."

Matthew leaned in, pressing a gentle kiss to Vinny's forehead. "Take all the time you need. I'm not going anywhere."

As Matthew left, Vinny sat in the silence of his apartment, the shadows of the past intertwining with the uncertainty of the future.
