Her wolf was chasing a scent. She lost control and her wolf had a mind of her own. Chasing a pray in the moon light. She was sniffing a tree moving her ears to locate the sound. The sound of twigs breaking. Amber was the watcher behind her eyes. She enjoyed every minute of her wolfs freedom.
This is what it's supposed to be like. Not bound to us like some tool for us to wave around. Amber was disconnected from her physically. But mentally she had never felt so close. Her soul was with her.
Tasting the rabbits scent in the air she had leaped forward straight into a pile of leafs and Amber could taste blood.
You did it. You're the most beautiful wolf I have ever seen and you chose me. Amber thought it encouraging.
The wolf seemed proud. Carrying her pray through the woods finding a small clearing to rest on. Laying there basking in moonlight and enjoying the freedom for the very first time and Amber smiled. I wish I could set you free little one.
She woke up rested. She opened her eyes stretching and rolling over to check the time she realised she was late. She wasn't stressed, her dream had kept her in good mood. Stretching again she enjoyed the pull in her muscles for the seconds it lasted and stretched even harder.
Chuckling she thought it felt like she had actually been running all night trying to imagine what she had looked like wrestling around in the bed.
She got and grabbed a towel from her cupboard, let her curly red hair out and relaxed when the hot water reached her skin.
She'd finished her shower when Somone banged on the door
"Package for you Miss" a voice on the other side of the door said. She opened and saw a big bearded guy with a big box and she thanked him and gestured for him to put it down. Pushing past her he put it inside her room with a thud.
"It's heavy Miss" he said with a smile putting his hand on his cap nodding once politely before he vanished back out.
Mom
Her package from her mother had arrived.
She swallowed her anger, she knew she'd have to call her eventually. She had been making excuses in texts about work and studying and looking into more classes if she found some spare time but she had promised to call as soon as the package arrived.
She would have to pretend everything was fine and she wasn't ready to lie like that. She didn't think her mother was part of this whole scheme as an attempt to do some ancient ritual. But no one could know that Amber knew the truth incase word got out and they decided to speed things up.
Truthfully Amber didn't know what would happen. Maybe she was the one to be sacrificed they might not even be sacrificing anyone. But with their crazy history and the contents in some of the books they couldn't be to careful.
She sighed. Atleast she had a few good moments before she got reminded of reality again.
Leaving the box were it was she got dressed and headed to the library.
The Library was opened but the sign said closed.
Did I forget to lock it last night?
She opened the door slowly poking her head in. She heard some thuds coming further in and slowly walked towards the noise with a million things in mind. She could be in danger. A different day she would have thought it was some dumb student doing something dumb but knowing what she knows. Every look, every noise even everyone she knew was a threat.
Surprised and relieved se saw Ezra and a short old man passing books between them, writing on clipboards. With some books ending up on the floor and others back on the shelfs.
She cleared her throat. The old man looked up from his clipboard through thick glasses and decided to ignore her continuing writing on his board.
Ezra raised a finger not taking his eyes of his papers before kneeling down to the old man pointing at something. The old man grabbed it and hurried off. Ezra definitely looked his title.
Clenching his jaw muscles as he's focused on the task, his white pressed shirt tight against his skin. His sleeves undone and neatly rolled up exposing his forearms.
She realised he did have tattoos. Trailing around his arms starting from his wrists. His shirts had always been buttoned all the way up his neck and down his arms. She had seen a little bit of ink on the side of his neck but she had never seen it exposed enough make out what it was.
Maybe that's why her dreams showed strange symbols she couldn't make out.
The memories of her dream stirred up feelings in parts of her body not suitable for a Library. She shook her head as if snapping her self out if it.
He turned around and met her with a genuine smile
"What are you doing?" She asked smiling back.
"Well we're going through the books incase there's something we missed. I only ever glanced through them as i didn't think anyone would leave them out but seeing them yesterday I'm wondering if Somone is placing them here somewhere in plain sight"
"you think I would miss if there's a cult book on my shelf's?" She was defensive. But she had been spending alot of time on it. Making sure everything belonged. It was one of the few things she could do with her long days alone in the library.
"It's just best to be thorough, I am the Dean after all and what Dean doesn't know about his own school?" He crossed his arms establishing authority again.
"I'm not saying you have done a bad job. I'm saying a extra set of eyes might catch something that has been missed. I will not deal with an attitude for doing my job" his expression was cold.
She nodded. She felt dumb. Ofcourse he was the Dean within these walls and she shouldn't have spoken to him as a scorned friend. He had a job and so did she. She collected the pieces of her hurt pride and grabbed a clipboard of her own holding it against her chest. Spun around looking at him eagerly "How can I help"
Relaxing he showed her the lists. To check every single book and make sure it was actually what the title said it was. He had a suspicion the covers had been changed.
"Don't worry about putting everything back Alfred and I will but everything back as it was tonight"
Alfred, that was the old rude man's name
The little man hurried quickly toward Ezra again carrying a couple of book. Ezra opened one of the quickly and Amber could make out a man wearing a wolf head. He closed it. And gave the small man a nodd. He hurriedly walked past Amber away from Ezra again.
"It's the 5th ones we found. I don't know how they been under my nose for so long"
Amber didn't know what to say
"If there's any more we'll find them" she gave him a reassuring smile and walked off.
She was checking sci-fi and fantasy sections. Opening book after book flicking through pages after pages for hours. She couldn't find anything at all. Atleast going through all the books all over again had been productive she thought sarcastically to her self.
Ezra had sent the little man to the tunnels under the school with the books and she couldn't help but feeling a little jealousy that the man had known about the secret room.
Ezra had had Somone coming up with some cafeteria food, microwave pizzas and pop to be exact. He put Amber at the table and sat down with her.
She wasn't sure what to make up it and how people would react to her and The Dean casually eating food together.
"Are you not worried what people might think?" She hesitated
"What? The Dean and the Librarian having food?" He acted as he had seen something outrageous.
"Fair enough" Amber shrugged.
It suggested that it was just that, the librarian and her boss. It stung, She hadn't want it to be more but all the same she had hoped it was.
He's hot and cold but he's soft aswell. He's controlling but she feels safe. Even now sitting Infront of him she couldn't imagine being in the same situation with anyone else.
"Eat" he commanded.
And she did. She thought about acting out and maybe trigger that part of him. The part that comes out to force her into submission. But today she had no energy for games.
"Bad night again?" He asked between bites
She shrugged "I have strange dreams"
"What type of dreams?" He sounded curious
"In one of them I can't shift. And something is chasing me but I don't know what it is. You were there and.." she stopped her self. Forcing down the image of his hand sliding lower down against her skin.
"And?" He tilted his head
Blushing she added "and in the next one I have no control over my wolf. I was the eyes but she had full control"
He watched her in silence for a moment while they thought on it.
"Was any of it bad?" He asked
"The being chased part wasn't fun" she says adding "but around you or my wolf free in the forest wasn't to bad"
"Not to bad" he smirked.
"It wasn't like that" she hurried
"Alright" He looked smug again
Dammit
"Maybe you need to get out and run more as a wolf. How often do you shift?"
"I don't know". She wasn't actually sure. It wasn't like her pack used to shift that often anyways. They were to involved in the human world to just get undressed and run for a few days.
Maybe they shifted for a few hours every full moon or so to let off some steam. Amber shifted less than that. But she had never felt connected to her wolf like the rest of them.
"I'll take you"
The look on his face was excitement. It made her smile on the thought of them to together in the woods. And even more so that it had gotten him excited.
"Alone" he added "I could use some exercise"
She wasn't going to pretend that didn't make her more interested .
"Okay" she bit her lip.
"But I'm bringing one of those wolf purse things I'm not gonna be around you naked"
He laughed at that.
"Go home and get ready. I'll come by tonight"
"But.." she looked around at the place with books and dust everywhere. And the little man was back labeling the shelfs so quietly she didn't even notice he'd been back.
"We're sorting it, the library is closed for the weekend while we go through the books."
She frowned " since when? "
"Since The Dean sent messages and emails to the entire school last night. Including those scheduled to come in today" he raised an eyebrow.
She waved her hand dismissing him and gave some excuse on stressed morning and being late. " I don't start the laptop first thing. I logg out before I leave the building and i logg back in when I'm inside it"
"Maybe I should have your number instead?" He was playful now.
"In case of emergency ofcourse"
but the corner of his mouth twitching told her exactly what type of emergency he meant.
"You have my files, I'm sure you can find it" she said confidently as she walked out the door.
