Chapter 6 - Ferris Town

After swatting flies on the bumpy road for 3 days, we finally saw the walls of Ferris town.

During the journey we didn't speak a lot. We had run out of material to talk about.

I tried to find ways to jog Krys's memories but he told me it's fine.

"I believe I will remember everything at the right time."

This was the only answer he would give.

A part of me was scared of what he would do when he remembered. Would he leave me and go back to his old life?

I wouldn't be able to stop him. The promise was entirely one-sided from me and he got no benefits from it. He might even have family waiting for him.

I dispersed those thoughts before they took over my mind. I turned my attention to the scenery instead.

Surrounding us were expansive golden fields, swaying with the winds and waiting to be harvested. They stretched further than the length of my village.

My butt was killing me and the mosquitoes had almost sucked me dry, it was the dream of the soft bed that kept me alive.

The dream was approaching reality as I saw the walls of Ferris Town.

They were made of huge pale white bricks that seemed well maintained.

There were splashes of mud or uncleaned parts but they didn't ruin the aesthetic.

We got to the gates and were stopped by the guards.

Krys took out two paper sheets from our luggage and handed them over without the guards asking.

The two guards didn't seem to care about us. They verified the documents and let us through without any questioning.

The guard looked unsatisfied with his job as he said in a mechanical voice, "Welcome to the town of beginnings… or the adventure town."

Krys put the documents back and got on the driver's seat. I sat next to him. I wanted to see this place with my eyes.

The first image I saw was of a bustling market. Hundreds of people gathered on one street.

Most of the people had opened up stalls in front of their house. They were selling everything from food to accessories.

This was a sight I longed to see when I was at the village.

The roads were broad enough to let multiple wagons into the Town. If this one was just a famous Town, how big would the city be?

This was both an exciting and frightening sight. My body trembled slightly with the mix of both emotions.

With a hint of anxiety I asked Krys, "Does this place bring back any memories?"

"No. It seems familiar but I don't think I have a deep connection to this place."

"Your village was more comfortable to me."

I gave him an awkward smile as a response.

After settling at a decent inn, we made our way to the adventurer's guild.

The infamous organisation I'd only heard about in stories. I excitedly walked beside Krys as we searched for the guild.

A kind man pointed us towards a tavern and we got to the door.

I breathed heavily, preparing myself for what was about to come.

Krys stood silently beside me, looking amused. He waited for me to get ready.

I mustered my courage and opened the door. Then I saw the scene inside.

Hairy, sweaty, unwashed fellows with brains inferior to monkeys and cheap beer spilled over their clothes.

Some danced around like maniacs. Others gambled and laughed like idiots.

This was the moment I realised, I was in no way… ready for this life.

Krys looked at me with pity in his eyes.
