Chapter 15 - Short Story 15

The story of Lin and Mei is a Chinese tragedy that takes place in the Qing Dynasty, in a small village at the foot of the mountains.

Lin was a young man of great beauty and intelligence, the son of a humble farmer. Mei, on the other hand, was the daughter of a rich merchant, known for her beauty and grace.

The two met by chance in a village market, and fell in love at first sight. But their love story was destined to be short and tragic.

Mei's father, in fact, had already promised his daughter's hand to a rich and powerful imperial official, who had offered a large dowry to marry her.

Mei was desperate, because she did not love the imperial official and did not want to marry him. But her father was adamant, and told her that she had to accept the marriage for the good of the family.

Lin, meanwhile, was determined to find a way to be with Mei. He offered to work as a servant in Mei's father's house, in the hope of being able to be close to his beloved.

But Mei's father was a cruel and ruthless man, and he could not stand the idea that a lowly servant could fall in love with his daughter. He chased him out of the house, threatening to kill him if he ever came near Mei again.

Lin and Mei were desperate. They knew they could not be together, but they could not stay apart either. They decided to run away together, in the hope of finding a better life somewhere else.

But their escape was short and tragic. They were captured by the imperial officer's soldiers, who took them back to the village.

Mei's father was furious, and decided to punish Lin and Mei for their disobedience. He ordered that Lin be sentenced to death, and that Mei be forced to marry the imperial officer.

Lin and Mei were desperate. They knew they could no longer be together, and that their love story was destined to end in tragedy.

The night before Lin was to be executed, Mei went to his cell to say goodbye. The two hugged and kissed, knowing they would never see each other again.

The next morning, Lin was led to the gallows and executed. Mei, meanwhile, was forced to marry the imperial officer, and lived the rest of her life in a luxurious prison, surrounded by wealth and power, but never forgetting her beloved Lin.

The story of Lin and Mei is a Chinese tragedy that tells the story of two young lovers who were separated from society and family, and who paid the price of their disobedience with their lives.

Their story is an example of the cruelty and ruthlessness of Chinese society at the time, and the difficulty of living an authentic and free life in a world governed by rules and conventions.

But their story is also an example of the love and passion that can exist between two people, and of the strength and determination that can lead human beings to fight for what they believe and what they love.
