Chapter Sixty-One

"You shouldn't have come, Emilia," he muttered. His tone wasn't cold—it was worse. It was exhausted.

I swallowed hard. "I know."

There was a weight between us, thick with all the words unspoken.

Finally, Ethan released a soft sigh rubbing a hand over his eyes.

"You're in trouble" he growled "Aren't you?"

I breathed unsteadily "Yeah"

He stared at me for a long time, then finally stepped aside.

"Then I guess you'd better come in."

{Ethan's POV}

The moment Emilia stepped inside my apartment, I felt it—a shift. As though the past had just entered uninvited, along with all its demons.

She wasn't the same. Weary. Broken. Haunted. But then again, maybe we all were.

Vickson followed her, his eyes scanning the room as if waiting for attack. Typical.

I shut the door behind them, exhaling slowly. This was a mistake.

I should have sent them away. Should have turned my back on the destruction that always followed in the wake of Emilia like a specter.
