"It's a human wearing a cloak."
"Very strong, even the strongest Machamp leader was defeated by his Pokémon in a single move."
"After defeating our clan leader, he used a few more moves to take down all the Machokes and captured every member of the clan."
"I barely escaped; he was too powerful."
"I went out to train in the morning, and when I came back and saw this, I hid outside."
"I was out early as well and got captured when I returned. So, this is what happened to the clan."
Riolu used its waveguide to communicate, its mouth never moving. Meanwhile, the three Machops spoke one after another, explaining everything they had witnessed.
Satoshi, listening carefully, pieced together the story. Now, he understood why the Machop family had disappeared from Mt. Moon.
"If this really was a family group, there should have been about five Machamp and at least twenty to thirty Machoke," Satoshi muttered to himself.
"And for that cloaked man to defeat them all so easily and capture every single one... If he's not a Gym Leader—no, even more than that—a quasi-Elite Trainer, this wouldn't have been so simple to accomplish."
Satoshi's assessment of the Machamp and Machoke's strength was clear: they wouldn't have been easy opponents. Yet, the cloaked man had subdued them with minimal effort. This spoke volumes about his power.
Riolu seemed to have reached a similar conclusion. Its frown deepened as it realized the kind of enemy it was dealing with.
Initially, it had assumed that the Machop family had been captured through deceitful means. Now it was clear they had been defeated by sheer overwhelming strength.
"Do all human Trainers go around capturing entire Pokémon families?" Riolu asked, its confusion evident.
Satoshi rolled his eyes. "Of course not. Even the most ambitious Trainers or evil organizations wouldn't waste their time capturing an entire family unless there's something special about them."
Riolu's gaze remained troubled. It pondered the cloaked man's purpose and the challenge of facing someone so powerful.
"What are you planning to do?" Satoshi asked. "That guy clearly had a reason for capturing the Machop family, but let's be realistic—you can't win against him. Even if you find him, it's going to end badly for you."
"How do you know he's that strong?" Riolu questioned. "Can you understand the Machop's language?"
Satoshi smirked. "The natural power within me is called the Power of Changpan. It allows me to communicate with Pokémon. While you used waveguide to talk to the Machop, I could understand everything they said."
Riolu's eyes widened slightly in understanding. "I see. That explains your ability."
Still, Riolu's expression remained heavy with melancholy. "I thought it would be a group of people using underhanded methods to capture the Machop family. But now, I know it was a powerful Trainer who defeated them outright. You're right—I can't win against someone like that."
Satoshi tilted his head. "Why are you so determined to save them? I know Riolu are naturally just, but this seems deeper than just a sense of duty."
Riolu hesitated for a moment before responding. "The Machop family raised me. They're not my tribe, but they're my family. I went out to train this morning, and when I returned, they were gone."
Satoshi's eyes narrowed. "They raised you? What about your real family?"
"I don't know," Riolu admitted. "Machop told me they found me as an egg by a river. A Machamp carried me back to their home, and I hatched later under their care."
Satoshi frowned. While Riolu was incredibly rare, its existence here implied that a Lucario—its parent—must have been nearby at some point.
Even though this was the Kanto region, there should have been some trace of a Lucario. How had Riolu ended up alone?
"This situation seems strange," Satoshi thought. "Frogadier's story is similar. It was born in a river, never saw its parents, and was raised by kind-hearted Water Pokémon. Treecko, on the other hand, came from Hoenn but was captured and brought here by people."
Despite the mystery surrounding their origins, Satoshi pushed the thought aside for now. The more pressing matter was how to approach Riolu.
"You know your current strength isn't enough," Satoshi said bluntly. "Facing someone that strong, there's almost nothing you can do."
Riolu clenched its paws but didn't argue. It understood the harsh reality.
"You have two major problems here," Satoshi continued. "First, you need to become much stronger. Second, you have to find this cloaked man. Without a lead on his location, your strength won't matter."
Riolu nodded solemnly. These two challenges loomed large, and it had no idea where to start.
"I have a suggestion," Satoshi said, his tone shifting.
Riolu's ears perked up, its red eyes locking onto Satoshi's. The intensity of its gaze reflected its desperation for a solution.
"My suggestion will help you get stronger and give you a better chance of finding that guy."
Riolu leaned forward slightly, anticipation gleaming in its eyes.
Satoshi smirked. This was his moment.
