The door clicked shut with a soft, final thud.
I stood there, staring at it, as if it might open again. As if Letty would come back. As if she didn't just look me in the face like I was a stranger and leave.
The silence grew like a tide, swelling up and engulfing me in a slow, malignant wave.
And finally, as if only now aware of what was happening, the tears erupted.
Tears poured so fast and sharply they choked me. I stepped back until I bumped into the wall and collapsed, my knees tucked up to my chest, the sobs racking out of me as if they had waited all their lives to be unleashed.
Letty was right. Wasn't she?
Was I really just walking away? From everyone? From everything? From her?
I used my palms to bury my face, trying to hide the truth that was revealing itself behind my eyes.
Maybe I was selfish. Maybe everything she said was true.
And maybe, just maybe, I did deserve to feel this way. I was still curled up upon myself on the floor when I heard the knock.
