Chapter 45 - The Mountain Stronghold

───「 GODZILLA POV 」───

Is this humanity's last stronghold?

Godzilla surveyed the mountain range stretching across Hokkaido. Its innate ability to detect human presence revealed their final concentration within these peaks. They were everywhere—clustered in transport vehicles behind ridges, with only a scattered few in the forward command center, mimicking their previous defensive pattern.

But this time was different. Transport vehicles dotted nearly every ridge slope, their purpose unclear even to Godzilla's ancient wisdom. Some human strategy was at play here, though its specifics remained a mystery.

No matter. They would all fall.

───「 Human POV 」───

"FIRE!"

The command echoed across the battlefield. Two hundred kilometers away, electromagnetic catapults launched supersonic fighters and bombers from aircraft carriers, their contrails stretching across the sky.

The full might of human weaponry erupted. Electromagnetic cannons and missile launchers unleashed their fury. Unmanned combat vehicles stationed on the ridges initiated their saturation attack. Hundreds of armor-piercing rounds, railgun shots, missiles, and rockets engulfed Godzilla's form in a storm of explosions.

The surrounding forest vanished in the onslaught, trees splintering and flying through the air. Every inch of Godzilla—torso, head, limbs—disappeared beneath the barrage.

Everyone watching via satellite knew this represented humanity's maximum conventional firepower.

Everyone also knew it wouldn't be enough.

───「 GODZILLA POV 」───

You cannot stop me.

Amid the bombardment, Godzilla's mouth opened, brilliant blue light gathering within. In the next instant, a violet concentrated beam pierced through an entire mountain peak, obliterating the positions behind it. The atomic breath didn't stop—it swept outward, cleaving through multiple mountain ranges as if they were paper.

The humans' response intensified. Every type of projectile imaginable struck at Godzilla: rockets, armor-piercing rounds, grenades, surface-to-surface missiles, even surface-to-air and air-to-air missiles.

Godzilla's breath answered them all, sweeping across the battlefield in an arc that dimmed both sky and earth. Everything in its path—incoming fire, mountain ridges, entire tank positions—vanished in a sea of flames.

The supersonic fighters arrived, having covered a hundred kilometers to join the battle. They launched their most powerful missiles. Godzilla's head tilted skyward, and two precise breaths reduced the entire squadron to metallic confetti raining from the clouds.

Twenty minutes into the battle, one-fifth of humanity's forces had already fallen. Even with the United Fleet's participation making this engagement far larger than any previous conflict, it wasn't truly a battle.

It was an advance.

───「 Human POV 」───

As Godzilla destroyed each defensive position, its ancient intelligence noted the peculiar behavior of the human forces. When it approached mountains with transport vehicles, nearby artillery would cease fire while distant rocket launchers increased their intensity, drawing its attention.

In these moments, the nearest transport vehicles would move, approaching Godzilla at low altitude during the brief intervals between nuclear shockwaves. Meanwhile, other transport helicopters would launch conspicuously from various directions, flying directly at the creature.

───「 GODZILLA POV 」───

They were sacrificing much to get a single transport helicopter close. The humans weren't fools—they wouldn't waste resources without purpose. These vehicles must carry weapons capable of significant damage. Or was it a trap, suggesting they'd discovered its ability to detect them?

Godzilla contemplated the possibilities, then reached a decision: thinking was unnecessary.

It was a Titan.

A Titan should act like a Titan.

And so it would.
