Opal's POV
Opal pressed herself against the wall just beyond the door, her breathing slow and measured. The guards had no idea she was right behind them, hidden by the power that allowed her to blend into her surroundings.
She had practiced masking her scent before, but this? Moving through the light without a shadow, vanishing into the air itself—this was new. A skill she hadn't yet mastered, but it was working.
The two guards walked ahead, chatting in low voices.
"I don't like this," one of them muttered. "They say she's strong, but she looks like a damn kid."
The other scoffed. "Don't be an idiot. The others will come for her. And when they do, we'll be ready."
Opal's chest tightened.
They weren't just expecting her brothers.
They were counting on them showing up.
She didn't have time to linger.
When the guards stepped through the door, Opal moved fast, slipping through right behind them before it could swing shut.
Cold air hit her like a blade, sharp and unforgiving.
