Opal's POV
The hospital room was quiet, save for the soft hum of the monitors and the steady beeping that echoed in the stillness.
Opal's eyes fluttered open, adjusting to the dim glow of the nightlight in the corner. For the first time in what felt like forever, her mind wasn't weighed down by exhaustion and pain.
She was awake.
Her body ached, sore and stiff from too many days lying still, but she ignored it. Exhaling slowly, she tested her fingers, then her arms. She shifted her legs beneath the blanket.
Heavy. Weak.
But they were hers.
And she wasn't about to stay in this damn bed a second longer. She couldn't.
With a deep breath, she pushed herself up, swinging her legs over the edge of the mattress. The cool hospital tile sent a jolt up her spine, but she clenched her jaw and ignored it. Pain is only temporary.
She had to move.
She had to get out of this room.
