Usually, the person who challenges whoever is in the position of authority has the confidence that he can defeat the opponent. No one would willingly sign up for death unless they are sure they'll win. Also, the Alpha's have the option to step down and succumb to the wishes of whoever challenges them without any fight but most times, their pride won't let them even if they know very well that they will never win the battle. They will rather fight and die fighting than be seen as a coward.
