Chapter 10 - SHATTERED ILLUSIONS

The hum of the city outside was a distant echo, unable to penetrate the tension that hung thick in the air. Vivian stood in the living room, her eyes locked on her phone as her fingers hovered above the screen. The message from Julian—the one that had kept her up all night—continued to burn in her mind.

"We can't keep doing this. She'll find out eventually."

Her heart had hammered in her chest when she read those words. The implications were clear, and though she had tried to convince herself that it was just a misunderstanding, her gut told her otherwise. Something was wrong. Something was off.

She had to confront them. But the question was how? And when?

The silence around her was suffocating. Vivian had no clue what was happening between Julian and Aurora, but she knew it wasn't just innocent. There was something deeper there. Something dangerous.

Her phone buzzed, cutting through her spiraling thoughts. Julian's name flashed across the screen.

Her thumb hovered over the message for a long time. He was reaching out—again. His apology for the distance between them, the sudden coldness that had set in after everything they had been through. His message was simple: "Are you okay?"

Vivian's chest tightened. No, she wasn't okay. How could she be? She couldn't be okay when the truth was slowly eating her alive. She had to face it. There was no more running.

She couldn't let the secret fester in the dark. It had to come to light. But how would she get the truth? Would they even tell her? And if she did confront them, how would she keep from falling apart?

Vivian set her phone down with trembling hands, her resolve hardening. She needed answers. She would have them—whether Julian or Aurora liked it or not.

---

A few hours later, the doorbell rang, piercing the stillness of the apartment. Vivian's heart skipped a beat. She didn't need to ask who it was. She could feel it in her bones.

She opened the door, and Julian stood there, a shadow of guilt and uncertainty on his face. His usual confidence was gone, replaced by something she had never seen before: vulnerability.

"Vivian," he said softly, his voice barely a whisper. "We need to talk."

Her stomach twisted into knots. She knew what was coming, but she wasn't prepared for it. She stepped aside, wordlessly allowing him to enter. Julian's eyes darted around the apartment, as if searching for something. But there was nothing left to look for. They both knew why he was here.

She led him to the couch, where they both sat in silence for a few moments, the tension between them so thick it was suffocating.

"I'm sorry," Julian finally spoke, his voice shaky. "I know I've been distant, but I never meant to hurt you."

Vivian looked at him, her eyes narrowing. "Then why didn't you tell me what was going on?" Her voice cracked, a mixture of pain and anger bubbling to the surface.

"I didn't want to hurt you," Julian said, his words coming out in a rush. "You don't understand. This—it's complicated."

"Complicated?" Vivian repeated, her voice rising. "You think that makes it okay? You've been keeping secrets from me. And I know there's something between you and Aurora."

His eyes flickered with something—guilt, shame—but he quickly masked it. "There's nothing between us," he lied, though the words felt hollow in his mouth.

Vivian's pulse quickened. She could feel the storm inside her building, threatening to burst free. She couldn't just sit there, pretending everything was fine.

"I saw the way you looked at her," she said, her voice barely a whisper, but sharp enough to cut through the room. "I saw how she looked at you. And I saw the message, Julian. I know you're hiding something from me. What is it?"

Julian froze, his gaze dropping to the floor. It was the moment she had been dreading. He couldn't keep the secret anymore.

There was a long, painful silence. The kind that felt like it stretched on forever. Finally, Julian spoke again, his voice full of regret.

"I care about her, Viv," he admitted quietly, the words almost breaking him. "But it's not what you think. I didn't want to hurt you, and I never meant for any of this to happen."

Vivian felt a chill run down her spine. The words hit her like a freight train, and she barely had time to process them before she stood up, backing away from him.

"How could you?" she whispered, her voice cracking. "How could you do this to me, to us?"

"I never wanted to hurt you," Julian said again, his voice low and desperate. "But the more I tried to keep it from you, the worse it got. I never wanted to love her, Viv. But I do. And I don't know what to do about it."

Vivian felt the world around her spin. Her legs wobbled beneath her, and she reached out for support, gripping the arm of the couch. Her chest was tight, her breath shallow. This wasn't the man she had fallen in love with. This wasn't the man who had promised her the world.

"I don't know what to say," she choked out, tears welling up in her eyes. "I don't know how to fix this."

"You don't have to fix anything," Julian said, standing up to approach her, but she held up a hand to stop him.

"Don't," she whispered, backing away. "Don't come near me."

He stopped in his tracks, the hurt and frustration clear on his face. "Vivian, please."

But she shook her head, wiping the tears away with the back of her hand. "I can't do this anymore, Julian. I need space. I need time to think."

There was a long pause, and for a moment, she thought he might say something more. But he didn't. He simply nodded, his face strained with emotion, and turned to leave.

As the door clicked shut behind him, Vivian sank to her knees, her hands clutching at the floor for support. Her mind was reeling, her heart shattering with every breath she took. Everything she thought she knew—everything she had trusted—was falling apart.

And the worst part? She wasn't even sure who to blame anymore.

---

The phone buzzed again, and this time, it was a message from Aurora.

"We need to talk."

Vivian stared at the screen, her fingers hovering over the reply button. The lies, the deceit—it was all falling into place. But what was the truth? Would it set her free, or shatter everything beyond repair?
