Chapter 11 - BROKEN BONDS

The world outside the window felt dim and distant, like a forgotten memory. The hum of the city was muffled by the thick veil of silence that hung in Vivian's apartment. She sat, still as stone, her fingers absentmindedly tracing the edge of her phone. The message from Aurora was still there, unread. "We need to talk."

Vivian's chest tightened as her mind replayed the conversation she'd just had with Julian. His words echoed through her head, over and over: I care about her, Viv, but it's not what you think. It's complicated. The air in the room grew heavier with the weight of the unspoken truth, and she felt as if she might suffocate under its pressure.

She closed her eyes, trying to push away the nausea rising in her stomach. How could he do this to her? After everything they'd shared? After the promises made? Everything she thought she knew about their relationship had come crashing down with those few, simple words.

Vivian's heart raced, her breath shallow as she stared at her phone. She could almost feel the cold weight of betrayal wrapping around her chest. But there was something else beneath the hurt—a spark of fury, dark and dangerous, that was just beginning to grow. It wasn't just pain that drove her now, but a thirst for clarity, for the truth. She couldn't keep living in this uncertainty. She had to know. She had to confront them.

Her hands trembled slightly as she hovered over the screen. She wanted to scream, to send something cruel, to punish them for what they'd done. But instead, she typed, "I'm listening."

The message went through, and her heart skipped a beat. Was she ready for what might come next? The truth. The answers. Would she be able to handle it? She wasn't sure. But there was no turning back now.

---

Minutes later, her phone buzzed again. This time, it was a voice message from Aurora. Vivian pressed play, holding the phone to her ear, barely able to breathe as she listened.

"I never meant for this to happen," Aurora's voice came through, hesitant but clear. "But you need to understand something, Viv. Julian and I... It's complicated. I never planned for this. I didn't want to hurt you, but... I can't pretend anymore."

Vivian felt the hot sting of tears at the back of her eyes but refused to let them fall. She gripped the edge of the coffee table harder. It's complicated. She had heard that excuse too many times. It felt like a cop-out, a way to mask their wrongs. But Aurora's tone was different. It wasn't defensive or dismissive. It was raw. And for the first time in the conversation, Vivian hesitated. Could she believe it?

"I've seen the way you look at him," Vivian's voice cracked as she spoke aloud. Her words were a whisper, but they held the weight of years of trust, now shattered. "And I know about the message you two exchanged. The one that said, 'We can't keep doing this. She'll find out eventually.' How long has this been going on, Aurora?"

There was a long pause before Aurora spoke again, the silence on the other end heavy and filled with tension.

"Vivian... I never wanted this to happen. I never wanted to hurt you. Julian... He's not like this, either. It's not simple. It's messy. And I know it's my fault, too. But I swear, it wasn't meant to go this far."

Vivian closed her eyes, her heart pounding in her chest. She was on the verge of something now. But what? Could she trust this explanation? Was it an apology or an attempt to distance herself from the consequences of their actions? She couldn't decide.

She wiped her eyes, her thoughts racing. "It doesn't matter, Aurora. You and Julian—you've crossed a line I can't ignore. I don't know if I want to understand any of it anymore. I just know that you've hurt me... and him, too. What am I supposed to do with that?"

Aurora's voice softened, almost breaking. "I'm not asking you to forgive me, Vivian. I just needed you to hear me out."

Vivian stayed silent for a moment, letting the weight of the words hang in the air. "I'll figure it out." She hadn't meant to say it aloud, but it was true. No one would do this to her, not Julian, not Aurora—not without facing the consequences. The hurt, the betrayal, had already taken root deep inside her. But so had something else—something that wasn't just about vengeance. It was about her. Her strength. Her control over her own life.

She wasn't going to fall apart. Not this time. She would take charge of this story.

---

As the conversation ended, Vivian slumped back into the couch, her body feeling numb. Her head was spinning, the fragments of the truth swirling in her mind like pieces of broken glass. Julian had betrayed her. Aurora had played her part in this deception. And yet, she was the one left holding the pieces, trying to figure out what came next.

Her phone buzzed again, and this time, it was a message from Julian. "We need to talk. I'm sorry. Please, I need to explain everything."

Vivian's fingers hovered over the screen. She didn't know if she was ready to face him, but she couldn't avoid it forever. He was right about one thing—this had to be addressed. She needed the final piece of the puzzle, the full picture of everything that had been happening behind her back.

"I'll be there soon," she replied.

---

The hours passed slowly. Vivian paced the apartment, her mind unable to settle. Was she angry? Yes. Was she hurt? Absolutely. But deep down, she could feel the bitter seed of revenge taking root. She had always been strong—she would show them that. She wasn't going to let them walk all over her. If they thought she would crumble into nothing, they were wrong.

When the doorbell rang, Vivian's heart raced in anticipation. She knew it was Julian. He had come to apologize, to explain, to beg. But all she could think was: What do I want from this?

She opened the door to find him standing there, his face drawn, his eyes pleading.

"Vivian," he said softly, his voice cracking as he stepped inside. "We need to talk."
