Chapter 4 - the web tightens

The soft hum of city traffic was a constant undercurrent as Matthew walked through the downtown streets. The moon hung low, casting its pale glow over the urban sprawl. He should have felt peaceful, even relieved. After all, he had just wrapped up a business meeting that, despite the tense moments, had gone according to plan. But there was something gnawing at him, a feeling he couldn't shake no matter how hard he tried.

His phone buzzed in his pocket. It was a message from Vinny.

"Are you still up?"

Matthew stared at the text for a few seconds. It was brief, but Vinny's words always carried weight. It had only been a few days since their last encounter, but Matthew had already started to feel the effects of the push and pull between them. He'd given in too easily, hadn't he? But what did it matter? He wasn't some naive kid. Vinny was a game, and Matthew always played to win.

He typed a quick reply. "Always up. What's up?"

His finger hovered over the send button, but before he could hit it, another message popped up from a different name—one that made his blood run cold.

Noah: "I know you're busy, but I'm not going anywhere. Let's talk."

Matthew's jaw tightened.

The encounter with Noah was inevitable. It had been months since they'd broken up, yet Noah never seemed to understand that their relationship was over. He had left Matthew emotionally bruised, and while he hadn't been the perfect boyfriend, Noah's persistence stung in a way Matthew had never been able to fully shake off.

He pocketed the phone and turned onto a quieter street, his footsteps echoing against the pavement. The only thing that mattered now was Vinny.

But as Matthew's mind wandered, the city's hum was interrupted by the loud laugh of someone approaching him. He looked up to see Eliza, her fiery red hair practically glowing under the streetlights, a cigarette dangling from her fingers.

Chapter 4: The Unseen Players

The world felt a little different this evening. Maybe it was the weight of the conversations he'd had earlier, or the way Vinny's smile still haunted his thoughts, but Matthew couldn't shake the feeling that something was changing. For the first time in a while, he felt the eyes of others on him—not in the way people typically watched him as he entered a room, with admiration or envy—but with curiosity, as if they were waiting for him to make a move.

He hadn't expected his life to spiral like this when he first met Vinny. There had been a thrill to the chase, the push and pull of it all, but now, with each passing day, he was starting to wonder if the thrill was all there was. Was it all just a game?

As he made his way through the city streets, the glow of neon lights casting an eerie reflection on the puddles below, his phone buzzed again. Another text, this time from Tom.

"You still coming to the club tonight? Or are you too busy sulking over your latest toy?"

Matthew rolled his eyes as he read the message. He hadn't heard from Tom since that morning, and if he was honest with himself, he wasn't particularly in the mood to deal with his best friend's antics tonight. Tom had a way of poking at the parts of Matthew that he usually kept hidden, and though Matthew would never admit it, there was something about the way Tom saw him that made him uncomfortable.

Still, the invitation was hard to ignore. Tom had a way of pulling him into things, even when he didn't want to be there. And besides, he'd need to be around people tonight. It was the only way to avoid thinking too much about Vinny.

"Fine. I'll be there," he typed, not bothering to add anything else.

An hour later, Matthew stepped into the familiar neon-lit club, the thumping bass of the music vibrating in his chest. It wasn't the kind of place he normally frequented, but Tom had insisted, and there was something about the chaotic atmosphere that always made him feel like he could disappear for a while.

Tom was already at the bar, a drink in hand, chatting with a few acquaintances. He spotted Matthew almost immediately, his signature grin spreading across his face as he waved him over. Tom was tall, lean, and dressed in a simple black leather jacket and jeans, but there was something about him that always drew attention. His messy brown hair framed his face just enough to give him an air of mystery, and his piercing blue eyes never seemed to miss a thing.

"Look who decided to show up," Tom said with a grin, tapping his fingers on the bar counter. "I was starting to think you were getting too comfortable with your little omega. Are you sure you don't need me to remind you how to have fun?"

Matthew gave him a half-smile, though it didn't quite reach his eyes. "I'm here, aren't I? Let's just get this over with."

"You know you love it," Tom teased, nudging him with his elbow. "Besides, I've got some new friends I want you to meet. You're going to love them. Well, at least, they're going to love you."

Matthew didn't respond. He had learned long ago that when Tom had that look in his eyes, there was no point in arguing. Tom was always in control of situations, even when he pretended not to be. It was part of his charm—and part of why Matthew never quite understood him. He couldn't decide if Tom's manipulation was something he admired or something that made him wary.

As they made their way to a private booth, Tom introduced him to a few people. There was Kieran, a quiet but observant guy who always seemed to be in the background, watching everything unfold. Kieran was one of those people who could read a room without saying a word, and though he rarely got involved in the drama, everyone knew he was never far from the action. His disheveled black hair and sarcastic humor made him an easy person to ignore, but Matthew had learned that Kieran knew more about people than they realized.

"You're always a welcome distraction, Matthew," Kieran said, his voice dry as he took a sip from his drink. "But I'll be honest, I didn't expect you to bring the drama tonight."

Matthew raised an eyebrow. "What are you talking about?"

Kieran shrugged. "Don't act like you don't know. It's all over your face. You're here because you're trying to forget someone, and I'm willing to bet that someone's not Tom."

Matthew opened his mouth to respond but stopped himself. Kieran wasn't wrong, but it was frustrating how easily he could read him. Instead, he leaned back in his seat and watched as Tom conversed with the others, his eyes occasionally flicking back to Matthew, studying him like he was a puzzle.

"You should watch yourself with Tom," Kieran added, his voice quieter now. "He might be your best friend, but he's got his own agenda. Don't be too trusting."

Matthew gave him a sharp look, but before he could respond, the voice of another familiar person rang through the air.

"Eliza, what are you doing here?" Tom asked, his tone light, but Matthew could hear the slight tension behind it.

Eliza swept into the booth, her wild, fiery red hair a stark contrast to the cool blue lighting of the club. She was dressed in black leather, her outfit as bold and chaotic as her personality. Eliza was always the one stirring the pot, creating tension between people and enjoying every second of it. There was no filter with her, no pretense. She said what was on her mind, and often, that meant she created drama wherever she went.

"I could ask you the same thing," she shot back with a smirk, dropping into the seat beside Kieran. "But then again, I'm not surprised to see you. You're always up to something, aren't you?"

Matthew glanced at Tom, noting the way his lips tightened when Eliza spoke. He could sense the undercurrent of unease between them, but he didn't have time to dig into it. Not right now.

"I didn't think you were into this kind of scene, Eliza," Kieran said with a raised eyebrow. "What's the occasion?"

Eliza grinned, her eyes flashing with mischief. "Just here to make sure you all don't get too comfortable. Besides, what's life without a little chaos?" She turned to Matthew with an exaggerated pout. "You look tense. Don't tell me you're still thinking about that poor omega?"

Matthew's jaw clenched. "I'm not thinking about him."

Eliza just laughed, leaning back in her seat, clearly enjoying the fact that she'd pushed a button. "Right. Of course, you're not. Just like you're not thinking about Noah, either."

The mention of Noah made Matthew's stomach twist. He had hoped he wouldn't have to deal with his ex tonight, but Eliza was always the one to dig into the parts of his life he preferred to ignore.

"Don't start, Eliza," Matthew warned, his tone low. "Not tonight."

Eliza just shrugged. "What? I'm only saying what everyone else is thinking." She winked at him before turning her attention back to the others.

As the night wore on, Matthew couldn't escape the feeling that something was off. He watched as Tom, Eliza, and Kieran chatted casually, their conversations laced with veiled jabs and inside jokes. They all had their roles to play, and it was clear they knew how to manipulate the people around them.

But Matthew wasn't naïve. He knew that even in this chaotic mess, there were deeper games being played, and he was just one piece in it all.

And then there was Vinny, who was still on his mind. How had he let things get so complicated? It wasn't supposed to be this way. He should have been in control. But the more he thought about it, the more he realized that he wasn't the only one who had been playing a game.

Tom's eyes flicked over to Matthew, a knowing look passing between them. "You're not fooling anyone, you know," he said quietly.

Matthew met his gaze, and for a moment, he didn't respond. He didn't need to. Tom always knew when he was lying, even if he didn't say it out loud.

"You might be in control of the situation with Vinny for now," Tom continued, his voice a whisper, "but don't forget… I know how to play this game too."
