Chapter 8 - The First Game Starts Rough? Salah: Let the Defender Play

Just one chapter today

After joining his new team, Pierre quickly integrated, training hard and adapting to Klopp's tactical system.

At the same time, he earned a new nickname: Defensive Dad.

The name came from Salah.

Most attacking players use feints and tricks to lure defenders into making mistakes before striking at the perfect moment.

But Pierre?

He was like a chess master, deliberately leaving gaps for attackers to exploit—only to trap them the moment they took the bait. Even when opponents avoided his traps, it felt as if he had planned for that too.

As Salah put it:

"Playing against Pierre makes me feel like a child. He's like a father who always knows what I'm thinking and controls me without me even realizing it."

Some teammates weren't convinced—Firmino, Mané, Chamberlain, even Henderson and Wijnaldum—all tried their luck.

None lasted more than two rounds before giving up.

Maybe because their expectations weren't too high, they didn't generate much frustration. The total negative emotion value Pierre collected was just 6,323 points.

Enough for another lottery draw.

This time, he won two bronze treasure chests, which contained nothing but injury recovery potions.

The Premier League is the only one of Europe's top five leagues without a winter break. While other leagues paused for rest, England entered its brutal Christmas fixture period.

Liverpool had already dropped points in the first half of the season, struggling with injuries and fixture congestion. The league title was slipping away, and their focus shifted to securing Champions League qualification.

The day after Pierre signed, Liverpool played Burnley, winning 2-1. However, captain Henderson suffered a rough tackle and was ruled out for a month.

With another match just days away, Pierre was finally in line to make his debut.

Liverpool's next opponent was none other than Manchester City—one of their fiercest rivals.

Under Guardiola, City had become a dominant force, spending heavily on world-class players. Even their substitutes were worth over €30 million each.

For Liverpool, this was a must-win game. Every point in the second half of the season mattered.

By 6 PM, the team bus arrived at Anfield Stadium, the heart and soul of Liverpool Football Club.

The 54,000-seat stadium was packed. Fans waved scarves, chanting in unison:

"You'll Never Walk Alone!"

Though Pierre was on the bench, the atmosphere gave him goosebumps.

Sitting beside him, Trent Alexander-Arnold grinned.

"Impressive, right?"

Everything about Liverpool was a source of pride for Trent. His entire family—parents, grandparents, even great-grandparents—were lifelong Liverpool supporters. And he himself had risen through the club's academy.

"Yeah," Pierre nodded. "It's incredible."

Trent beamed. "I know you're from La Masia, but trust me—Camp Nou doesn't have this kind of passion."

Pierre had to agree. The atmosphere at Anfield was one of the most intense in Europe.

Liverpool lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Karius in goal. A back four of Joe Gomez, Van Dijk, Lovren, and Robertson. Emre Can and Wijnaldum as the holding midfielders. Chamberlain, Salah, and Mané behind Firmino up front.

Manchester City, as expected, played a 4-3-3. Ederson in goal. Delph, Otamendi, Stones, and Walker in defense. Gundogan, Fernandinho, and De Bruyne in midfield. Sané, Agüero, and Sterling leading the attack.

From the opening whistle, Liverpool fans fueled the team with their energy.

By the ninth minute, the stadium erupted.

Under Firmino's relentless pressing, Fernandinho misplayed a pass, and Firmino pounced. He shielded the ball from his opponent, then threaded a perfect pass through the City defense.

Chamberlain made his move.

Breaking through City's defensive line, he timed his run perfectly to stay onside. One-on-one with Ederson, he calmly slotted the ball into the far corner.

1-0, Liverpool.

The stadium exploded.

The DJ's voice boomed: "Tell me, who scored the goal?"

The crowd roared back.

"Chamberlain!"

It felt like the perfect start.

But instead, it was the beginning of a disaster.

Manchester City responded with brutal efficiency.

Liverpool's midfield, particularly Emre Can, struggled to control the game. He lost possession twice in dangerous areas, leaving the defense exposed.

By halftime, the scoreboard showed a humbling 1-3.

Pierre glanced at the score and frowned.

"Not exactly an ideal first game to step into..."

Salah trudged into the tunnel, frustrated.

The game had been a nightmare for him. With Emre Can struggling, Liverpool's midfield was constantly turning the ball over. The attack had no rhythm—every time Salah made a run, possession was lost before the ball could reach him.

For the first time, Salah found himself missing Pierre's presence.

A stable midfield would give him more chances to break forward.

As he neared the locker room, one thought ran through his mind.

"We need Pierre out there."

He wasn't going to wait for Klopp's decision.

Salah was going to speak up.

"Let the defender play."
