Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: Nathan's Investigation Begins

Nathan sat in his meticulously organized office, the cool, sterile glow of the dual computer monitors reflecting in his sharp, calculating eyes. The silence was a stark contrast to the bustling activity outside, a deliberate choice on his part, allowing him to focus without distraction. The soft hum of the air conditioning and the almost imperceptible whir of the computer fans were the only sounds that dared to disturb the quiet. He was a man of precision, of order, and he approached his investigation with the same meticulousness he applied to every aspect of his life.

He had decided to delve into Leonard's activities with the thoroughness of a forensic accountant, determined to uncover any inconsistencies or hidden agendas. He began with the company's digital records, cross-referencing expense reports with meeting schedules and project timelines. He meticulously examined every transaction, every email, every document, searching for anomalies.

The first discrepancies he found were subtle, almost negligible: a dinner receipt for an exorbitant sum, charged to the company account, with no corresponding client meeting listed; a series of small, seemingly random purchases from a high-end tech store, labeled vaguely as "office supplies." Individually, they were insignificant, easily dismissed as minor oversights. But Nathan's intuition, honed by years of navigating the complex world of corporate intrigue, told him otherwise.

He moved on to Leonard's email correspondence, his fingers flying across the keyboard as he searched for keywords and phrases. He scanned countless messages, his eyes narrowing as he found a few emails to external contacts, discussing obscure projects and confidential information. The language was cryptic, the details vague, but the implications were clear: Leonard was involved in something that was not within the scope of his intern duties. He copied the emails, saving them to a secure folder on his personal drive, determined to decipher their meaning later.

Meanwhile, in the sprawling, opulent CEO office, Ryan was experiencing a baptism by fire. He sat behind his father's massive mahogany desk, a fortress of polished wood and imposing grandeur, but he felt like a small, insignificant figure, lost in a vast, uncharted territory. The reports and financial documents stacked before him were a daunting, impenetrable wall of numbers and jargon, a language he did not speak.

He tried to concentrate, to absorb the information, but his mind kept drifting to more appealing distractions: the latest sports scores, the new racing simulator he had just installed on his gaming rig, the upcoming company party and the potential for some serious fun.

"This is a complete and utter nightmare," he muttered, rubbing his temples, his eyes burning from hours of staring at the screen. "I feel like I'm trying to solve a complex equation written in ancient hieroglyphics."

His phone rang, its shrill tone cutting through the silence, a harsh reminder of his responsibilities. It was Mr. Henderson, a major client, whose shipment had been delayed due to an unforeseen logistical complication. Ryan took a deep breath, trying to project an air of confidence he did not possess.

"Yes, Mr. Henderson, I understand your concerns," he stammered, his voice wavering slightly. He tried to decipher the notes scribbled on a yellow legal pad, but they seemed to make even less sense than the reports on his desk. "We're… we're working on it. We'll get back to you with an update… very, very soon."

He hung up the phone, his face flushed with embarrassment. He felt like a fraud, a pretender, completely out of his element. He missed Leonard's calm, reassuring presence, his ability to handle any situation with effortless grace. He missed having his older brother to rely on.

Nathan entered Ryan's office, his expression serious, his eyes sharp. "How's the CEO life treating you?" he asked, a hint of sardonic amusement in his voice.

Ryan looked up, his eyes pleading. "Don't even ask. I'm drowning in paperwork, dealing with angry clients, and trying to figure out how to use the coffee machine without causing a fire. I miss Leo. I feel like I'm failing at everything."

"Well, he is the reason you have to do this," Nathan replied, his tone laced with suspicion. "I've been looking into his activities as an intern, and there are some odd things going on."

Ryan leaned forward, suddenly interested. "Odd how?"

"A few expenses that don't add up. Meetings he didn't put on his schedule. And his behavior is… inconsistent. He's too good at some things, and too bad at others. It does not make any sense."

Ryan frowned, his brow furrowed. "What are you saying, Nathan?"

"I think he's hiding something, Ryan. Something big. And I'm going to find out what it is."

Ryan nodded slowly, a sense of unease creeping into his voice. "Well, if you find anything, let me know. I have a feeling that this is going to end badly. For everyone."

Nathan nodded, his eyes fixed on the computer screen. He was determined to uncover the truth, even if it meant exposing his own cousin's deception. He had a feeling that the answers he sought were buried deep within the company's records, waiting to be unearthed.
