Synopsis
There stood a boy, around sixteen or so, in the middle of an endless plain. It stretched on for miles, cracked and desolate. There were no buildings, no mountains, hills, or anything really. It was all the same, apart from the boy. He was Ren — well that's what he thought at least. He couldn't remember anything. His name too would be long forgotten, if it weren't written on the ground with his own blood. There was nothing special about Ren. From average looks, average height, average smarts, none of it was outstanding. Just waking up he understood this. He was the definition of average. Coming to his senses, there was one thought that crossed his mind. What happened to make the world fall to such a state? The answer was closer than he expected.

Chapter 1 - Desolate Plain

A vast, endless, plain surrounded the world. Nothing stood out. It was a desolate flatland covered in cracks that spiderwebbed. There wasn't a building, hill, or a tree that stood out. There truly was nothing — well almost.

In the middle of this plain lay a boy, sixteen years of age. He had jet black hair, so black in fact it almost looked two dimensional. His eyes were the same, two pools of emptiness that swallowed all light. His skin was deathly pale and he was incredibly skinny.

The boy was on his back, eyes staring into the sky. Thoughts ran through his mind. One of the most persistent ones was...

"Who am I?"

His voice sounded unfamiliar. Raising his hands, they too were unfamiliar. This body was not his. That's what he thought at least.

Getting up was a struggle, yet he did it nonetheless. Soon a terrible pain flowed over his body. Looking down he saw it. A part of his shirt was missing and so was a part of his torso.

Blood flowed down from the egregious wound. His body felt cold, too cold. The sun was blistering hot, but he wasn't.

Moaning in pain he tried to move, yet his eyes remained indifferent to the fact that he had a mortal injury. Searching the ground for anything that might belong to him he found something that made his spine shiver.

There his name was written in his own blood. Ren. The boy's name was Ren.

This time his eyes did respond. Finding his name brought him back from the state of shock. He was a person and he was dying.

Ren continued to search laying his eyes on a bag. Quickly, he limped towards it in hopes of finding something to stunt the bleeding.

Zip

He opened the bag. There were multiple items in it. A flask of what Ren presumed to be water, a couple bags of jerky, a set of clothes, and one roll of bandages.

Ren couldn't help but sigh. This was not going to be enough to even remotely stop the bleeding, but it would help.

Taking his shirt off, he then rolled the bandage around his waste. It was just enough to cover about half of the injury leaving gaps between each row of the bandage. Each time he rapped the wound Ren would grunt in pain.

"Aughhh..."

After about five minutes, he was done. But just as he handled the his first problem another pain came towards him.

Ren's throat hurt as he swallowed, no sweat came despite being in such harsh temperatures, his lips were incredibly chapped.

'Dehydration.'

Ren looked around and for the first time he genuinely noticed his surroundings. He was in a wasteland. There was no nature, river, or even rock. It was an endless plain.

Ren's throat screamed at him again as he tried to swallow. Drool escaped from his mouth and he quickly licked it back. Luckily, Ren noticed a flask just minutes ago.

He rushed through the bag, grabbing the metal bottle. Twisting it open, Ren almost downed the whole thing but he remember the scene before him. He was in a plain that stretched for miles and miles. Ren couldn't just drink all his water right away if he wanted to get out of here. He would have to ration it.

Slowly, Ren let a portion of it fall into his mouth and he was immediately washed with a feeling of relief. Albeit, just a hint. Ren didn't have enough water to spare to make all the pain disappear.

After handling those first problems it was time to focus on something more important.

"Who am I?"

Ren repeated the question again.

The first thing he did to try to find out was to see what he looked like.

'I'm skinny, really skinny. And pale.'

Ren looked at his arms and his legs. Although not malnourished, it was evident he wasn't getting the amount of food he needed to. Then Ren looked up at his bangs.

'Black hair.'

That was about all he could figure out. Well those things and that he was also a boy. Ren didn't have to check, he just knew.

After checking his appearance he then sat back down. Ren shut his eyes and crossed his legs.

"My memories are gone."

Ren couldn't help but say aloud.

He searched his brain but nothing. All of it was gone.

Ren knew general words and phrases, his muscle memory was intact, but his actual memories were gone.

"Just who the hell am I?"

He couldn't help but say one more time.
