This was it. This was were he was going to die. Those we the thoughts running through Ren's mind right now.
Without a doubt, that thing was going to kill him, and he couldn't do anything about it.
The world beneath Ren trembled as the centipede closed the gap between each other. It looked like a raging bull.
As the adrenaline took over Ren's body, he could no longer feel the pain coming from his right side. He couldn't feel anything really. Realizing this, Ren ran even faster. He was now in a dead sprint.
Still, it was futile. The distance between Ren and the monster was closing fast.
'What do I do!'
Running would only postpone the inevitable. He had to figure something out, and now.
Ren stumbled over his feet, rolling over multiple times before finally stopping. Now that thing was only a couple hundred feet away from him.
He tried to think of anything, everything. If there was a chance something might work, Ren would try. That's when just one idea finally came.
Cursing, he tore the bag off his back.
-Zip!
Opening it up, Ren searched for one item. Rummaging through the bag, he threw everything out until his eyes landed on a green flask. His water bottle.
Since he had been rationing his water intake, the bottle was pretty much full.
Quickly, Ren unscrewed the cap, splashing some of the water on the ground in the process.
He turned his head to see the centipede now only a few dozen feet away.
Ren had an idea. A terrible idea that would probably not work, but an idea nonetheless.
What was the one weakness to fire?Water.
With shaky hands, Ren struggled back to his feet, facing towards the devil coming his way. He held to bottle in front of him.
Time seemed to slow down as he prepared to face death. Ren's life would probably be flashing before his eyes right now if he could remember it. But he couldn't, and maybe that was for the best. Right now, Ren needed absolute concentration. This was his only chance.
Each of the giant centipede's steps shook the ground beneath him.
The monster was only ten feet away, and Ren started counting 10...9...8...7... until it was face to face with him.
Just as the centipede opened it's jaw, revealing thousands and thousands of teeth inside, Ren jumped to the side. He twisted his body mid air causing him to groan.
'One chance...'
The centipede probably wouldn't fall for this again, and he wouldn't have any water left after this.
Ren threw his arms in front of him, holding the bottle tightly with both hands. The water continued with the momentum pushing itself forward... to the centipede's core.
He fell horizontally towards the ground, scraping his face on the rough terrain. Ignoring the pain, Ren kept his eyes locked on to the water. Following it's path towards the bright sphere.
Unfortunately, almost all of it evaporated immediately.
'This is really it then...'
There went his only chance.
Seeing the centipede turn to charge at him, Ren closed his eyes waiting for death to soon follow...five seconds...ten seconds...fifteen seconds...but it never came. He opened his eyes surprised.
The centipede was convulsing on the ground, with it's core flickering.
Ren couldn't help but open his mouth in surprise.
'What happened?'
He could've sworn he saw all the water evaporate. Ren watched it all unfold and yet he still didn't know what happened.
But unbeknownst to him, through the mist just one drop made it to the beast's core... and that was enough.
Ren watched with wide eyes as the centipede let out an ear shriveling scream.
The monster curled up into a ball continuing to make inhumane sounds for ten minutes. And then it stopped.
The centipede stopped making any sound. The core flickered but this time it stayed off. The flames followed with nothing powering them anymore. Soon, the bones too fell apart without a horrid power to keep them together.
It took him a couple of seconds to realize what had happened.
It was dead... and Ren was alive.
He fell on his back, putting his hands on his forehead, and stared up at the sky.
Soon sleep followed.
