The high-level meeting was in session, with Clint Barton, Phil Coulson, Natasha Romanoff, and Maria Hill seated around the table. Nick Fury sat on the side, his expression stern.
"It seems we have a new case to solve," Phil Coulson explained, his voice calm. "Nick, can you brief us on the situation?"
Nick Fury nodded, his eyes scanning the room. "Three years ago, we found a lost temple deep in the jungle. The temple had many symbols and ancient languages, but the most intriguing was a tablet with the language 'The Forgotten One'."
Clint Barton raised an eyebrow. "The Forgotten One? Sounds like a bad horror movie title."
Natasha Romanoff shot him a look. "This is serious, Clint. The tablet was in English, and it was accompanied by petroglyphs with markings of an eye. The translation is 'The Watcher', 'The One Who Watches', 'The One Who Observes'."
Maria Hill leaned forward. "And what does this have to do with the mysterious figure we saw?"
Nick Fury's expression turned grave. "The thing is, many different eras and parts of the world have this identification of this person. Fragments of statues, cryptic writings... they all point to the existence of an individual, but with different names and titles."
Phil Coulson nodded. "In ancient Egypt, he was known as the Watcher of the Sands. In ancient Greece, the Oracle of Gods. Some Eastern cultures called him the Silent Observer."
Clint Barton snorted. "And I'm sure he's also known as the Guy Who Watches You Sleep."
Natasha Romanoff rolled her eyes. "Clint, focus."
Nick Fury continued. "And in Norse mythology, he's known as the All-Seeing Wanderer. And in Native American cultures, the Spirit of the Land."
Maria Hill frowned. "So, what does this all mean?"
Nick Fury's expression was serious. "It means we have a common thread of watching, observing, and waiting. And some cases in the Vatican's book archives seem to suggest a shadow figure similar to what you saw, Natasha."
Clint Barton raised his hand. "So, you're saying a living god who knows? Is still alive and watching the world right now? Right, am I crazy or not?"
Phil Coulson shot him a look. "That's enough, Clint. We need to focus. We don't know what this thing is, if it's a god or a demon. We don't know if gods and demons exist, but we need to make sure it's not a threat to this world."
Nick Fury nodded. "Find more information, Phil. If he's real, then this world is messed up, and gods and demons exist too."
The meeting ended with a sense of unease, the agents exchanging worried glances.
"Dismissed," Nick Fury said, his voice firm.
As the agents filed out of the room, Clint Barton turned to Natasha Romanoff and whispered, "You know, I think I'm going to start calling him 'The Guy Who Watches You Sleep'."
