Lying to Maxwell is extremely selfish of me. It bridges all the trust he has in me and our relationship, but I just can't find it in me to tell him the truth.
"I am not wolfless like you all think."
He does a double take, watching me like a screw has gone loose in my head. His brows furrow in disbelief, his arms crossing over his chest as he stares at me, waiting for an explanation.
"We all saw it, Nadia. You couldn't shift because you have no wolf." He retorts, his tone filled with skepticism.
"What if I didn't want to shift?" I counter, trying to keep my voice even, but I know how absurd it sounds.
Maxwell scoffs, shaking his head. "That's not how it works. Werewolves don't just decide not to shift, especially when ordered by a superior. Your body wouldn't allow it. The urge would be too strong. And besides, why the hell would you refuse?"
