"You're a good friend, Daniel. A great friend actually, and you're also very helpful at work. Don't get it twisted and make this awkward for us, please," I blurted out, finally finding my tongue.
His expression softened slightly, and he moved back a little, giving me more breathing space.
"I thought you liked me but were in denial. You shut that woman down so fast I assumed you had feelings for me."
I sighed, rubbing my temple. "I'm sorry, that must have been awkward. I was just shocked and got defensive without thinking. No hard feelings, Daniel. You're a great guy."
He studied me for a second, then nodded. "Alright then. The night isn't getting any younger, I should get going." He turned, opened the door, and grabbed the bottle of wine he had set down earlier. "It was nice hanging out with you, Lily." He said, stretching out my wine, "See you at work."
"See you at work," I replied, waving goodbye as he stepped outside.
